Exactly What to Wear and Bring to Your First Hot Yoga Class, According to an Instructor

Hot yoga is a sweaty affair [1], and what you wear and bring to the studio can make or break your workout [2]. After all, you don't want to overheat in an already 100-degree room [3] or slip in a puddle of sweat mid-Bakasana. Personally, I'm always soaked during workouts, so I reached out to Sakina Williams, a yoga instructor for more than 20 years and owner of BKBuddha, to find out exactly how to dress the part and what to bring with you. "Moisture-wicking material is best as it does not absorb the sweat which will leave you feeling dry through the end of class," she said. Plus, "if sweat is absorbed, it will dry quicker than any other fabric and decrease odour." Read on for her picks, then head into the studio with confidence.

Chafe-Resistant Sports Bra

Sakina likes this sweat-wicking, fast-drying H&M High-Support Sports Bra [4] ($25). "Never opt for cotton when taking hot yoga because it can cause chafing, skin irritation, and heaviness due to sweat absorption," she told POPSUGAR.

Sweat-Wicking Leggings

These 90-Degree by Reflex High-Waist Leggings [5] ($20) are perfectly breathable and flexible, so you can move in and out of poses with ease. They're made with nylon and spandex to wick away sweat.

Fitted Tank Top

"For those who may not be comfortable without a top, I'd recommend a lightweight tank, like this Outdoor Voices TechSweat Tank Top [6] ($55)," Sakina said. In addition to keeping you cool and dry, the form-fitting silhouette of this tank will allow your instructor to better see and adjust your form, she explained.

Headband

If you have long hair, it's best to wear it up in a ponytail or braid to keep it out of your face. This super soft Sweaty Betty Anna Medium Headband [7] ($10) will stay secure and keep sweat from running down into your eyes.

Yoga Towel

The Manduka eQua Hyacinth Yoga Towel [8] ($38) is made with soft, lightweight, quick-drying microfibre. Drape it over your mat to prevent slipping.

Water Bottle

You'll need to drink plenty of water before, after, and if possible, during your workout. Invest in a bottle that will keep your drink cool, like the Takeya Actives 24-Oz. Insulated Water Bottle [9] ($25, originally $33).
