As soon as I discovered barre classes [1], I knew they were for me. I took ballet throughout my childhood, and as an adult, I love that the micro-movements in barre are low-impact, while still helping to firm and tone your muscles [2]. These workouts also seamlessly blend aspects of yoga, Pilates, and ballet, which helps keep my workout routine from growing stale. And I always work up a sweat. If you're trying barre for the first time [3], these are the essential pieces of gear I suggest wearing to stay cool and comfortable for your workout. They've always helped me power through a tough class!
Lightweight Tank
I tend to dress in layers for a workout and peel them off as things heat up. The Outdoor Voices TissueWeave Tank Top [4] ($45) is a perfect base. The cropped design prevents it from getting in the way of my workout, and its breathable, lightweight fabric keeps me cool.
Low- to Medium-Impact Sports Bra
Barre focuses on very small movements [5], making it a low-impact workout. Because of this, I usually opt for a comfier sports bra, like the Reebok Racerback Medium-Impact Bralette [6] ($24). The fabric is moisture-wicking, which makes it easier to stay dry during tough workouts.
Moisture-Wicking Tights
I always wear tights instead of shorts, since they provide better coverage during certain movements. My personal favourite? The Lululemon In Movement 25" Tight [7] ($98), made with sweat-wicking Everlux fabric. These pants feel like a second skin — no pulling and tugging during workouts here.
Cropped Pants
If you prefer a looser, cropped pant over tight leggings, try these Athleta Barre Kickflare Pants [8] ($79). I keep them in rotation because they're sweat-wicking, breathable, and very flattering — not to mention incredibly easy to move in.
Long-Sleeved Hoodie
I like to start the class in this Amazon Essentials Long-Sleeved Cross-Front Hoodie [9] ($14 to $16), which is comfortable, versatile, and moisture-wicking. I'll usually peel if off midway through my workout and then throw it back on at the end of class.
Grippy Socks
Sneakers are not worn during barre class, but a pair of Barre Socks With Grip [10] ($9) will help you feel more stable and confident while tackling harder sequences.
