Another gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics [1] is in the bag for team GB [2], thanks to Bethany Shriever, who won the BMX Olympic gold. The win means she becomes the first British medalist — along with Kye Whyte, who won silver in the men's race — in the sport since it was introduced to the games in 2008.

But as Shriever said in her own words, "to even be here is an achievement in itself", because the road to Tokyo wasn't an easy one. Her win comes two years after she launched crowdfunding after not receiving funding from UK Sport. With a £50,000 goal to crowdfund, Shriever also worked part-time as a teaching assistant to cover training costs. "To win a medal, let alone a gold medal, I'm over the moon," she said following her win.

"It's a bit surreal, it's a bit mad — I haven't even spoken to my family yet. I can't wait to speak to all them and see how they're feeling. I saw them at the end there, getting all emotional, and it's just amazing — I can't believe it," she added.
