"Healthy Is Not a Body Type": This Body-Positive Artist Is Breaking Down Stereotypes

23/09/2020 - 09:40 PM

On Instagram, artist Lena Dirscherl [1] is known as BoPoLena. It's there, on their account, that they share their simple, powerful illustrations advocating for body positivity across all genders and body types, encourageing self-love in the hopes, they told POPSUGAR, of helping their followers heal.

Dirscherl has struggled with body image issues and body dysmorphia [2], and began creating their illustrations back in 2016 as a way "to heal myself and others." It started as a short, three-month "artistic trial," a way to practice their artistic skills while experimenting with a new and important subject, and grew into a project that continues to this day. "I found a huge part of my artistic voice back then," Dirscherl said. "I'm still motivated to dive deeper into this topic and to create even more body positive illustrations!"

Dirscherl said there are some trolls that lurk on their account, but they don't bother talking to them; they're "not the audience I'm trying to reach," they explained. Overall, the response to their artwork has been positive and even grateful. "A lot of people contact me to thank me for my work," Dirscherl said. "They tell me it helps them feel better about themselves."

This is exactly what Dirscherl hopes to accomplish. "I hope that my illustrations have a positive impact on the viewer," they said. "I want to spread a positive message and help people to heal. If you are surrounded by negative voices, it can be so important to read something positive about yourself and your body."

"Be the way YOU want to be!"

"[Lizzo [5]'s] message of body positivity and self-love is so important! This is why I used some of her lyrics as inspiration for a hand-lettering illustration."

Discherl illustrated this in collaboration with Stevie Blaine (bopo.boy [6] on Instagram), who said, "It's time to break out of that box, time to realise that your body and all bodies deserve to be seen, deserve to take up space and deserve to look damn good whilst doing it!"

"FREEDOM."

"It's summer. It's hot. It's time for chilling on a beach! No regrets. No shame. But lots of ice cream!"

Discherl created this illustration as part of their intersex body positivity series, explaining, "The term intersex is an umbrella term that refers to people who have one or more of a range of variations in sex characteristics that fall outside of traditional conceptions of male or female bodies."

"We will come so much further!"

"Health is more than your weight and the food you eat! It's more than just your body and your looks! Health also includes your mental health and your overall happiness, not only your body and bodily functions."

"It doesn't matter what your weight is right now and it doesn't matter if you gain a little during these strange times! You are awesome and worthy of love either way!!!"

"With this artwork I want to spread positivity and create a safe space for intersex people."

"We are all different. And we all look different. And that's okay."

"You can't just look at someone's body type and assume 'yep, that person sure is healthy' or 'wow, that person lives unhealthy'. There are more factors at play than weight."
