Breakdancing Olympics 2024: Meet the Athletes

Breakdancing, called "breaking" by those who participate in the sport, was confirmed on Dec. 7 that it will make its Sumer Olympic Games debut in 2024 in Paris, after making its Olympic debut at the 2018 Summer Youth Games in Buenos Aires. This is exciting news after seeing sports such as surfing, sport climbing, karate, and skateboarding also recently joining the Olympics for the Summer Games in 2021. In an AP News article, the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach applauded the addition of these sports, and said it will make the Summer Games "more gender balanced, more youthful, and more urban."

There's definitely some controversy among the breaking community regarding this news. Some are super excited about the inclusion of breaking in the Olympics, while others are worried that it'll affect the authenticity of breaking, according to an article in USA Today. Hopefully the integrity, creativity, and uniqueness of breaking will stay intact. Here are a few breakdancing athletes — known as B-boys and B-girls — we're keeping our eye on ahead of the Summer Games in 2024!
