4 Essential-Oil Rollerballs That Could Help Soothe Your Uncomfortable Period Cramps

13/04/2021 - 10:20 PM

I've been eyeing essential-oil roller balls for menstrual cramps [1] for a while now. They seem like convenient and compact tools to keep nearby or in my bag when cramps strike unexpectedly. I also wouldn't mind adding another remedy to my repertoire.

As far as at-home cramp solutions go, things like applying heat and physical activity remain the most popularly recommended. However, there is some evidence that suggests essential oils could be useful tools. One very small study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research found that patients with primary dysmenorrhea (or menstrual cramps) who massaged a blend of lavender, clary sage, and marjoram essential oils diluted in an unscented cream on their lower abdomens [2] from the end of one menstruation until the beginning of their next menstruation experienced relief. Another study found that the inhalation of lavender could perhaps help alleviate some menstrual-cramp symptoms.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's a cure-all for horrible cramps. Everyone is different in their response to at-home remedies, and if you do experience bad period pain, you should always check in with a doctor for their advice. It's also a good idea to check with a doctor before incorporating essential oils into your routine, too, as some essential oils are not considered safe for people with certain health conditions [3] or people of certain ages.

Essential oils can also be particularly irritating to the skin, so if you do choose to try them out, you'll want to be sure they're diluted. It's typically recommended to test them on a small patch of skin first to ensure no irritation.

If you are ready to give essential oils a try, rollerballs make the process a little easier because they're preblended and often already diluted in a carrier oil (though you should always check the ingredients list!). Ahead, check out four that I'm interested in adding to my shopping cart.

Saje Natural Wellness Period

The Saje Natural Wellness Period [5] ($20) is made up of a key essential oil blend of geranium, roman chamomile, and lavender, plus grapeseed oil, apricot kernel oil, vitamin E, and ho wood. It's designed to offer calming comfort and relief from PMS symptoms, including cramps and bloating. The brand specifically recommends applying it on the lower abdomen, lower back, hips, and thighs.

Cora Calming Body Oil

Next time you're stocking up on tampons from this organically-focussed brand, consider adding the Cora Calming Body Oil [6] ($22) to your cart. It uses a blend of pure lavender, clary sage, and marjoram essential oils to address menstrual discomfort.

Lola Essential Oil Blend

Pre-diluted in jojoba oil, the Lola Essential Oil Blend [7] ($28) consists of a blend of 17 different essential oils to help provide relief from period cramps. Some of the call-out oils include capsaicin to create a heating sensation and chamomile and geranium to help improve blood flow and alleviate tension. Lavender also makes an appearance, providing a calming component. The brand recommends rubbing the rollerball on dry skin on the lower abdomen ten to 12 times; the soothing effects reportedly kick into gear in about 15 minutes.

Blume Cloud 9 Period Cramp Oil

On top of period cramp-fighting clary sage, the Blume Cloud 9 Period Cramp Oil [8] ($18) is made with peppermint to address nausea and lemon for a little mood boost.
