Workout Gear You'll Be Glad You Bought For Your First Trail Run, According to a Pro

21/09/2020 - 11:00 PM

You don't necessarily have to buy all new running clothes if you're pivoting from the track to trail running. According to Amanda Basham [1], a professional trail runner, endurance coach, and iFit athlete [2], it really all depends on the terrain of your run, but there are still some key trail-specific items you'll want to pick up.

"The biggest thing is making sure you're safe," Basham said. "Most mountain runs, you'll always want to carry water and a jacket because the weather can change very quickly. But if you're just going for an hour run on town trails, there is much less risk and typically involves the same type of gear. The elements do make a huge difference in what you should wear. Again, primarily for safety, but it also makes the run much more enjoyable."

Start your shopping research here by checking out Basham's suggestions on the absolute essentials that a beginner trail runner should own.

Rabbit Breezy Back Jacket

"Weather in the mountains can change quick, but you also don't want to have heavyweight items to lug around," Basham said. "Find a lightweight, water- and windproof jacket that packs into your pocket or hydration vest. I use the Rabbit Swish Jacket [4] ($84, originally $120) on hotter, more clear days and the new Rabbit Swish Jacket on colder, more wet days."

While the Swish isn't available until October, Basham noted it's water-resistant and made of recycled coffee grounds — how cool!

Altra Superior 4.5 Trail Running Shoes

"Trail shoes are built for the terrain, including bigger lugs for traction," Basham said. "This is important for comfort and preventing injuries." Basham turns to a variety of Altra trail running shoes, but her go-tos include the Superior 4.5 Trail Racing Shoe [5] ($110) and the Timp 2.

UltrAspire Basham Race Vest

A running hydration pack is nonnegotiable! "It's important to always take water in the mountains," Basham said. "You never know if the weather will change or your one-hour run will accidentally turn into three."

When shopping, consider two of Basham's favourites: the UltrAspire Basham Race Vest [6] ($90) and the UltrAspire Momentum.

Coros APEX Pro Premium Multisport GPS Watch

GPS watches are very expensive, but saving up for one isn't a bad idea if you plan on getting into trail running regularly. "This is important for knowing how long you've been out and how far from the trailhead you are," Basham said. "You can also download routes to follow so you don't get lost." Basham called out the Coros APEX Pro Premium Multisport GPS Watch [7] ($500) for its awesome map feature.

Drymax Trail Running 1/4 Crew Turn Down

Socks might seem like a category you can skip over, but according to Basham, wearing quality, running-specific socks is key. "Socks are the biggest reason for blisters, so good socks are worth the investment. I use a variety of Drymax, but my favourites are the Trail Running 1/4 Crew Turn Down [8] ($14)."
