I Got Drunk Off This "Fit Wine," and It Didn't Ruin My Workout the Next Day

I don't drink nearly as often as I used to [1], but I still enjoy getting a decent buzz on occasion. I don't love how that buzz disrupts my habits the next day, though. Even the slightest hangover [2] usually results in me skipping my workout [3] and eating all the junk food I can get my hands on.

These days, my drink of choice is mostly red wine. I love enjoying a nice glass (or two) of red wine with dinner, friends, or while hanging out with my parents. The problem is the sugar in the wine [4]. While it can certainly add to the flavour, it can also wreak havoc on how I feel the next day.

That's why I was very excited to learn about FitVine Wine [5], a low-sugar, keto-friendly wine that claims to fit an active, healthy lifestyle. I decided to give it a try and see if this wine could solve my dilemma.

The company makes a variety of wines [6], both red and white. I opted for the FitVine Wine Cabernet Sauvignon [7] ($16). I'm not going to say I drank the entire bottle, but I'm also not going to say I didn't. Let's just say I drank enough to really test if indulging in this wine comes with the hangover repercussions of other wines.

I went to bed undeniably drunk. Now, I did take a few hangover precautions [9] I've learned over the years. I downed a bottle of water before going to sleep and had another one by my bed in case I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom . . . which I did, and then I drank the second bottle of water.

The next morning, I felt surprisingly normal. I was more tired than usual because drunk sleep is never as restful as sober sleep [10]. But I didn't have a headache, I wasn't nauseous, and I didn't feel like I immediately wanted to eat a hamburger and fries. And to my surprise and delight, I managed to get a workout in.

So, what makes this wine different? FitVine uses an extended fermentation process that allows for lower sugar levels without lowering alcohol content. The wines average less than 1 gram of sugar per liter, equating to less than 0.09 grams of sugar per glass. To put that into perspective, the average glass of wine has 1.17 grams of sugar [11], according to the US Department of Agriculture. FitVine's process also extracts more tannins, they don't use flavour additives, and their crossflow filtration makes the wine gluten-free and vegan-friendly.

All this to say, I've found my new go-to wine for the times I want to indulge in the evening but still work out the next morning.
