I Tried Trader Joe's Jicama Wraps, and After My First Bite, I'm a Huge Fan!

Call it fate but when I was shopping at Trader Joe's, picking up stuff for taco night, and I saw these Jicama Wraps in the fridge section, I knew I had to buy them! In case you don't know what jicama is, on the back of the package it says, "This tuber resembles a crunchy cross between a water chestnut and an apple." This root veggie has a mild and neutral flavour and is low in carbs and calories, so it's a perfect healthy alternative to a flour or corn tortilla. Sounds good on paper, but how does it taste wrapped around taco fillings? Keep reading to find out.

What Are the Ingredients in Trader Joe's Jicama Wraps?

One ingredient — jicama! These wraps are just thin slices of jicama, and like tortillas, they're pliable enough to bend.

What's the Nutritional Information For Trader Joe's Jicama Wraps?

Two wraps have just 15 calories and zero fat, cholesterol, or sodium. They have just three carbs and offer two grams of fibre.

How Do Trader Joe's Jicama Wraps Taste?

OK, on to the answer to the question you really have! Let me be clear that I'm usually only into flour tortillas or hard corn taco shells. I'm not a fan of using lettuce wraps, because when I want a taco or burrito, I want the real deal.

With that said, even though these Jicama wraps look really thin and they're made solely out of a vegetable, they were fantastic! They had a delightful crunchy texture, that was like a firm apple, but the flavour was so mild that all I tasted was the rice, beans, and tomatoes I filled it with. I was shocked I loved them immediately after that first bite!

Do You Cook Trader Joe's Jicama Wraps?

I tried these Jicama Wraps three ways: uncooked, warmed up in the microwave, and also heated in a cast iron pan. I enjoyed them all three ways but I loved them raw or slightly warmed in the microwave best.

When I cooked these wraps in the pan, the water evaporated a little, which made the already small wrap curl up a bit and shrink in diameter. It made for a slightly thicker and chewier texture, but I felt like it was too small to fill.

How Much Do Trader Joe's Jicama Wraps Cost?

For $4, you get 12 wraps. Their recommended serving size is two wraps, so that means six servings per container, or if you have three wraps at a time, you'd get four servings. As a plant-based eater who's always trying to eat more whole foods, I'll definitely buy these again!
