17-Year-Old Lydia Jacoby of Team USA Wins Her First Olympic Gold Medal in the 100m Breaststroke

27/07/2021 - 05:00 AM

Team USA's 17-year-old Lydia Jacoby [1] went from training in a 25-yard pool in Seward, Alaska to winning her first Olympic [2] gold medal in the women's 100m breaststroke. Up until the final seconds of the race, announcers were convinced South Africa's Tatjana Schoenmaker [3] was going to take the gold medal. However, in the last lap, Jacoby — who happens to be a Pisces — powered past Schoenmaker to clench the gold medal.

In a post-race interview with Lilly King, fellow Team USA member and bronze medalist of the evening, King expressed that she was glad to see her gold medal legacy in the women's 100m breaststroke go to Jacoby. Ahead are moments during and after Jacoby's first Olympic gold.
