In 2021, I'm Taking Care of Myself by Recommitting to My Fitness Routine

12/01/2021 - 01:05 AM

I love New Year's resolutions [1] because I relish the opportunity to look at my life, set goals for myself [2], and have a clean slate to actualize those goals. I'm also of the camp that you can turn over a new leaf on Jan. 2, April 23, or really any day you want. The new calendar year does still hold some promise for me, and one of the things I'm most interested in achieving for 2021 is to recommit to my fitness routine. I'm feeling like I'm in a bit of a workout rut, for a couple of reasons, and since I really do love to move my body [3], I'm making movement a priority this year.

During that period between Christmas and the new year, when nobody really knows what day it is, I spent lots of time on the couch in my pajamas [4]. I don't feel guilty about taking a break and resting, but now, I want to feel stronger. Plus, I've been consistently working out at home over the last nine months, but I am finding myself gravitating more toward the 15- or 20-minute workouts vs. the 45-minute to an hour videos. Look, any movement is better than nothing. However, I feel like my endurance has dwindled, and I want to work to get it back, which means moving for a little bit longer. This year, I want to feel more comfortable in my own skin, and I always feel better after a great workout. If you're looking to recommit to your fitness routine, keep reading to shop my picks of products to help you stick to your goals.

Girlfriend Collective Simone Bra and Compressive High-Rise Legging

I'll admit it, I'm motivated by workout clothes. The fabric of this Girlfriend Collective Simone Bra [6] ($48) and Compressive High-Rise Legging [7] ($68) is so soft but also breathable and moisture wicking. Plus, I'm obsessed with the brown shade.

Degol Skipping Rope With Ball Bearings

One of my goals is to increase my endurance, so I'm upping my cardio. This Degol Skipping Rope With Ball Bearings [8] ($10) is an affordable, easy way for me to get moving, and it doesn't require a run in the January temperatures.

Amazon Basics Neoprene Dumbbell Hand Weights

I really like this set of Amazon Basics Neoprene Dumbbell Hand Weights [9] ($51) because they seem to be the perfect beginner set for me. If you couldn't tell, I'm not a big weight trainer, but I'd like to start exercising with these and make my way up to 10, 15, even 20 pounds.

BalanceFrom GoYoga All-Purpose 1/2-Inch Extra Thick Yoga Mat

I got this affordable BalanceFrom GoYoga All-Purpose 1/2-Inch Extra Thick Yoga Mat [10] ($23), and it has been life-changing. It's not the mat I would recommend for balancing complex yoga poses, but if you're doing exercises on the floor, this is super padded and comfortable.

Nike Air Zoom SuperRep 2

For HIIT workouts, everyone has been recommending these Nike Air Zoom SuperRep 2 [11] ($120) shoes to me, and I think it's time I invest.

Bala 1lb Weight

These Bala 1lb Weights [12] ($49) were the hottest commodity this past year. They're finally back in stock, and they're great to add some extra intensity to low-impact workouts like Pilates.

Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit

These Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit [13] ($124, originally $160) are the ultimate running shoe: they're supportive and comfortable, and they go with everything. If you want to start a running journey, go with these.

Larq Self Cleaning Water Bottle

A key component of wellness is proper hydration, and that's why I want to treat myself to this Larq Self Cleaning Water Bottle [14] ($76, originally $95). I do enough dishes every single day, and the fact that I don't have to worry about cleaning this bottle is so awesome. Plus, it's pretty.

The Mirror

The Mirror [15] ($1,500) takes home workouts to the next level. It has hundreds of different workouts to choose from, at various different levels and lengths. Take a yoga class or do a boot-camp-style workout, all from the comfort of home. In the absence of a personal trainer or group fitness instructor, this may be just the push I need to really get moving.

Bala Bands

With these Bala Bands [16] ($20), I can complete pretty much any kind of workout. Plus, the cheeky sayings are motivating!

Love Sweat Fitness 2-in-1 Foam Roller

If you're reading this, you probably need to foam roll. Yes, it might be painful in the moment, but the results are well worth it. I like this Love Sweat Fitness 2-in-1 Foam Roller [17] ($30).

P.volve Ultimate P.volve Package

This P.volve Ultimate P.volve Package [18] ($190) has everything you could possibly need to kick-start your at-home workout regimen. I really like P.volve as an awesome low-impact, high-intensity workout, and I plan on committing more to the regimen in 2021.

Apple AirPods Pro

Workouts without music are not workouts, in my opinion. The Apple AirPods Pro [19] ($219, originally $249) have great sound quality and actually stay in your ear.

TRX Home Gym Suspension System

The ultimate in minimalist gym gear, the TRX Home Gym Suspension System [20] ($185, originally $200) sets up in less than 60 seconds and can be anchored almost anywhere — even a doorway or a tree. The purchase includes a one-year subscription to an app with over 80 workouts using the system . . . so you'll never get bored and never have an excuse.
