Should I Shave Before an Ob/Gyn Appointment?

Your Gynaecologist Officially Doesn't Care If You Have Pubic Hair or Not

You should never feel embarrassed by what you choose to do or not do with your pubic hair, and that extends to your visits to the gynaecologist. Yep, that's right: Even if you're mid-pelvic exam, gown on, legs in the stirrups, you don't have to feel uncomfortable or judged. Your doctor has zero opinion on your hair down there. We even checked with an ob/gyn to confirm it.

"One hundred percent, leave it as is," said Leah Millheiser, MD, ob-gyn and director of the Female Sexual Medicine Program at Stanford Health Care. Pubic hair of any configuration, she told POPSUGAR, will not get in the way of a pelvic exam. "Whether you have no hair down there, or you have a lot of hair down there, whether you have piercings down there, there is no judgement being made."

Dr. Millheiser shared that some of her patients will go as far as apologising for having pubic hair or forgetting to shave. "Never, ever, ever apologise to your gynaecologist or your healthcare provider who's doing your pelvic exam," she said. "We are not paying attention to what your pubic hair looks like. However you want it to look, however it is, whatever state it's in, it's fine."

Truly, don't feel like you have to comment on it at all. "Whether you shave it all off, wax it all off, laser it off, have full pubic hair, it's all good," Dr. Millheiser said. "Doctors don't care. It doesn't make a difference to what we're doing."

In conclusion: whatever you do with your hair down there is 1,000 percent up to you. Your doctor isn't worried about it, so you shouldn't be either.
