Simone Manuel [1] and Simone Biles are among the most dominant athletes in their sports, but when the two made their Olympic debut in 2016 — where Manuel became the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal in swimming, and Biles racked up an impressive four gold medals and a bronze [2] in gymnastics — people immediately began confusing their names. Three years later, Manuel decided to pay tribute to Biles on Halloween [3], posting photos of her dressed as the gymnast, along with the caption: "Since people mix us up anyways . . . not a bad day to be Simone (Biles)!"
The details of her costume are actually impeccable. She donned a leotard that's similar to the one the US gymnastics team wore when they won gold at the World Championships [4] earlier this month and even dusted some chalk onto her legs.
Both athletes have had an incredible year: Biles became the most decorated gymnast in World Championship history [5], and Manuel crushed her own record while defending her title [6] in the 100-meter freestyle at Worlds. With the Tokyo Olympics less than a year away, we look forward to seeing more of these two. Let's just promise to keep them straight. Keep reading for more photos!
