Step into the office of psychiatrist Melissa Shepard, MD, as she shares this "put a finger down" medical edition. She asks you to guess what the diagnosis is based on these symptoms. Spoiler alert: it's depression [7]. Put a finger down if you:

  1. Have changes in sleep habits
  2. Feel more irritable than usual
  3. Feel more anxious [8]
  4. Have feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  5. Have changes in appetite
  6. Have trouble with motivation
  7. Have difficulty enjoying things
  8. Have problems focusing
  9. Are having thoughts of death or suicide

You don't need to deal with these symptoms of depression on your own. Seek out professional help, by seeing a psychiatrist or a therapist (here's how to find a therapist [9]), because with treatment, as Dr. Shepard said in one of the comments, "I promise it can get better."

If you are feeling anxious or depressed and need help finding help or resources, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America [11] and the National Alliance on Mental Illness [12] (1-800-950-6264) have resources available.

If you or a loved one are experiencing suicidal ideation or are at risk, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline [13] has several resources and a 24/7 lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
