Do This Three-Move At-Home Workout With a Water Jug

You Don't Need Weights For This 3-Move Home Workout — Just Grab a Water Jug

One thing we love about so many home workouts is that they're versatile — so versatile you don't even need typical gym equipment to get them done. Is your access to dumbbells limited? How about using some cans of food or your favourite bottles of Merlot instead? Don't have a kettlebell? Ever considered a gallon of milk? In the video above, Angela Gargano, AFAA-certified personal trainer and three-time athlete on American Ninja Warrior, shows us how easy it is to use a a water jug in place of weights!

Gargano told POPSUGAR via email that she chose a one-gallon water jug it's a common item to have at home, and it's functional. "The jug is the perfect size," she explained, "and the handle is perfect to simulate a kettlebell, this way you can still do kettlebell swings and presses." Ahead is a description of her full-body workout routine you can do anywhere in your house (she uses her bedroom!).

Angela Gargano's 3-Move Full-Body Water Jug Workout

Make sure you warm up first. This sweat session is a 10-15-20-15-10 pyramid workout. That means you will be doing 10 reps of all three moves, 15, 20, then back down. It should take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete depending on your fitness level, but focusing on form is more important than doing it for time, Gargano said. The moves are:

  1. Goblet squat
  2. Kettlebell swing
  3. Kneeling single-arm overhead press (sets on both sides)

You can watch Gargano demonstrate all these moves in the Instagram slideshow above. She wrote in the caption that you can spill some of the water out if the jug is too heavy (note: a gallon of water weighs about eight pounds). If you want to modify this workout, you can do a pyramid of 5-10-15-10-5 instead. This is just proof that you don't need weights to get a good workout in! Plus, this will remind you to hydrate, too.
