Tom Holland took to Instagram this weekend to announce he's taking a break from social media in order to protect his mental health. The 26-year-old posted a video, which he revealed he'd been trying to film for over an hour, to inform his 67 million followers that he's chosen to delete social media apps and distance himself from the digital world for a while.

"I have taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming," he said. "I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online, and ultimately, it's very detrimental to my mental state, so I decided to take a step back and delete the app."

Holland, who's been filming his latest show, "The Crowded Room", in New York, continued to inform followers of the resources available to them if anyone else has been struggling with their mental state. The foundation set up by his parents, Nikki and Dom Holland, called The Brothers Trust supports a charity called Stem 4. Holland detailed the "wonderfully innovative education programme" that it offers via free apps: Calm Harm (helping teenagers to resist or manager the urge to self-harm), Clear Fear (to help young people manage anxiety), Move Mood (to help young people manage low moods and depression), and Combined Minds (to help family and friends provide mental health support).

"There is an awful stigma against mental health, and I know that asking for help and seeking help isn't something we should be ashamed of, but it is something that is much easier said than done," Holland continued. As he signed off the video thanking fans for their support, he declared he will be "disappearing from Instagram again". Comments flooded the post with support for the actor. Justin Bieber wrote, "Love you man ❤️," while Diversity's Perri Kiely left the hands-up emoji on the post.

Holland, who's in a relationship with costar Zendaya, is the latest celebrity to highlight the importance of mental health. Singer Shawn Mendes cancelled his world tour last month in order to "take time to heal", and Sophie Turner opened up about how social media makes her anxious, which is why she takes regular digital breaks.

Holland's powerful video will undoubtedly help others who may be struggling and act as a reminder that we all need to take stock of our mental health and regularly check in with ourselves. Watch the "Spider-Man" star's important post below.
