Vegans, Get Excited! Trader Joe's Has a New Dairy-Free Almond Milk Yoghurt — But Is It Good?

24/06/2020 - 01:30 AM

As a plant-based eater, shopping at Trader Joe's is a pure delight, because there are so many options. And I'm not just talking about some new frozen veggie or variety of apple (but seriously, have you tasted the Envy apples?!). Those are exciting, but I'll actually squeal out loud in the store when I see a new vegan alternative to non-vegan products — like ice cream or veggie burgers [1].

That's why I was so overjoyed to see this new dairy-free almond milk yoghurt. It has a decent amount of protein — more than Trader Joe's Cashew Milk Yoghurt [2] — but does it taste good? Keep reading for more details on this new offering — and note from my taste test.

Nutritional Information For Trader Joe's Vanilla Bean Almond Milk Yoghurt

One container of Trader Joe's Vanilla Bean Almond Milk Yoghurt is 180 calories, with 11 grams of fat and 18 grams of carbs. It offers two grams of fibre, with 10 grams of added sugar and five grams of protein. You'll also get four percent each of your daily iron and calcium.

The ingredients are almond base (water, almonds), cane sugar, cornflour, locust bean gum, vanilla beans, natural flavours, live and active cultures (bifidobacterium, lactobacillus acidophilus, l. bugaricus, l. paracasei, streptococcus thermophilus, l. rhamnosus, propionbacterium shermani).

The sugar content is pretty comparable to other vanilla yoghurts [4], although if I wanted less sugar, I'd have to go with a plain yoghurt, which isn't always what I'm in the mood for.

This yoghurt is also comparable sugar-wise to mango yoghurt made from cow's milk [5].

How Does Trader Joe's Vanilla Bean Almond Milk Yoghurt Taste?

First of all, would you just look at that creamy texture and the speckles of real vanilla bean?! This yoghurt is incredibly creamy with a deliciously sweet and slightly tangy flavour. It tasted perfect on its own, but also was yummy with some fresh raspberries, granola, and a sprinkling of nuts. I loved that it wasn't watery, lumpy, or weirdly thick — the texture was wonderful. I'm a huge fan!

How Does Trader Joe's Mango Almond Milk Yoghurt Taste?

Equally as silky and creamy as the vanilla bean, the mango has a fresh and fruity tangy flavour that was hard to resist — I easily spooned down the entire container in minutes! It had no weird aftertaste, absolutely no chalky texture like I've experienced with other non-dairy yoghurts, and was shockingly delicious (I've had some pretty terrible dairy-free yoghurts in my time). I also appreciated that this yoghurt had no bits of fruit in it — it was just 100 percent pure creaminess.

Will I Buy Trader Joe's Almond Milk Yoghurt Again?

Both the vanilla and mango Creamy Almond yoghurts were amazing, and easily make it into my top five favourite dairy-free yoghurts. The price is pretty reasonable, too, at $1.49 per container. And for those avoiding dairy and soy, this is a tasty, easy-to-find alternative.

Once again, Trader Joe's has wowed me with one of their new plant-based products, and although it's higher in sugar than I prefer, I'll definitely be purchasing this again. I can't wait to add it to smoothies and make popsicles with it!
