US Figure Skaters Are Putting on a Show — Watch All Their Team Event Programs So Far

04/02/2022 - 10:00 PM

Figure skating at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing kicked off on Feb. 4 with the team event, and apparently Team USA decided to put on a show. Through three disciplines so far, the US has a somewhat surprising lead over the Russian Olympic Committee, courtesy of career-best programs from Nathan Chen, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue [1], and Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier. With five events still to go, including the women's short program, it's looking like this competition will come right down to the finish.

In the figure skating team event, teams are divided by country and awarded points based on how each skater finishes in their discipline: 10 for a first place finish, nine for second place, and so on. The US has shown very well so far, sitting in first place with 28 points after first-place finishes from Nathan Chen's short program [2] and Hubbell and Donohue's rhythm dance, as well as a third-place finish from Knierim and Frazier. The Russian Olympic Committee is in second with 26 points and China is in third with 21. While the ROC is still favoured for gold (especially with world record holder Kamila Valieva [3] rumoured to be skating the women's short), Team USA has put itself in position for a potential upset or a silver-medal finish.

No matter how it all turns out, day one of figure skating has already given us some stunning performances to enjoy from Team USA. Catch up with the career-best skates from Chen, Hubbell and Donohue, and Knierim and Frazier ahead!

Nathan Chen's Short Program in the 2022 Olympics Team Event

If Nathan Chen could conquer any demons remaining from his first Olympics, he was the clear favourite to win the men's short program in the team event. The three-time world champion looked calm, cool, and collected from the moment he hit the ice [5], and threw down two quads and a triple axel en route to the second-highest men's short program score in history.

Hubbell and Donohue's Rhythm Dance in the 2022 Olympics Team Event

This is Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue's second Olympics but their first Olympic team event, and they wasted no time in making their mark. Dancing to a mashup of Janet Jackson [6] songs, the three-time national champions hit every move with precision and flair, earning them their highest rhythm dance score ever and a surprise first-place finish in the team rhythm dance. (ROC's Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov were the favourite, but Katsalapov stumbled in a step sequence and opened the door for an upset.)

Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier's Short Program in the 2022 Olympics Team Event

Pairs skating is said to be Team USA's weakest discipline, and it seems like Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier took that personally. Their fiery performance set to "House of the Rising Sun" resulted in a career-best short program score and was enough for a third-place finish behind pairs from China and ROC.
