These 7 Athletic Brands Were Created by Women of Colour, and I Need 1 of Everything

18/09/2020 - 10:53 PM

I'm a creature of habit, but every now and then, I like to venture out and try new athletic brands. I've made a conscious effort to support brands founded by Black people [1] and people of colour over the years and come across the following workout brands created by Black and brown women.

I'm sure I'm not the only person looking to put my money back into the Black and brown communities, and because of that, I curated this list of amazing workout apparel brands that will look great on you whether you're doing a HIIT workout or participating in a Netflix marathon [2]. If you like bodysuits, luxe athletic apparel, classics like biker shorts, and bold, bright prints, keep scrolling!

Soley Fit

Have you ever found a brand that makes you want to buy every single item? That's how I feel about Soley Fit [4]. Stefania Okolie is a journalist and fitness enthusiast and wanted to create a collection that told the story of strong women. It's going to be hard not to buy one of everything, but if you only have to choose one item, I highly recommend the Nzingha Shine Bodysuit [5] ($110).

Alala

If you love luxury, Alala should be at the top of your athletic wear list. The brand was founded by Denise Lee and consists of leggings, sports bras, crop tops, loungewear sets, and more. My favourite piece at the moment is the yellow Peak Tight [6] ($125).

Full Court Sport

Full Court Sport started out as a tennis collection but since its inception, founder Marguerite Wade has expanded it to a full blown athletic wear line. I'm usually not fond of biker shorts, but I have my eyes on the Textured Biker [7] ($55).

Rochelle Porter

If you like bold prints and vibrants colours, you're going to love Rochelle Porter's namesake brand Rochelle Porter [8]. The collection consists of leggings, crop tops, shorts, and sports bra. Not sure what to get? I've got my eyes on the Wakanda For Now Sports Bra [9] ($44).

EleVen by Venus

EleVen [10] was founded by Venus Williams and features gear for tennis players and those who dabble in a little bit of everything when it comes to fitness. I am currently loving the Smooth Shortie [11] ($39).

Y-Fit Wear

Y-Fit wear [12] was founded by Mark Agyakwa and represents hope, overcoming adversity, and motivation. You'll find everything from fitness accessories like socks and hats to their coveted workout apparel collections. If you see something you like, act fast: there are no restocks. I recommend the Women's Black Hourglass Set [13] ($89).

Culture Fit Clothing

If you're in search of high-performance activewear rooted in African culture, look no further than Culture Fit Clothing. You'll find leggings, sports bras, tank tops, and even yoga mats to get you through your next sweat sesh. My favourite piece is the Purple Ankara ZigZag Leggings [14] ($55).
