Ben & Jerry's is firing out flavours faster than you can holler "we all scream for ice cream," and we at POPSUGAR are on a sugar-fuelled quest to sample them all. The latest of the flavours, Birthday Cake [2] (£4), celebrates the brand's 40-year anniversary. Is it worthy of such an occasion? We gave it a taste test to find out.

Vanilla cake batter ice cream paired with pink frosting, strawberry swirls, and cake pieces may sound like a flavour combination you'd pick out as a child, and you're not wrong. But although it may sound sweet, its balance with nostalgia makes it surprisingly palatable. In fact, one editor said, "It reminds me of a Screwball straight from an ice cream van," adding that the cake pieces "are what a birthday cake should taste like." While you may have reservations towards cake in your ice cream, fear not. The pieces manage to maintain a soft, spongy texture, without the danger of becoming soggy or doughy.

The verdict? Though it may not quite compete with the likes of firm favourites Cookie Dough and Phish Food, conceptually it's great and it's undeniably moreish. It had my taste buds doing the Macarena for hours. Pair with jelly and sprinkles, and you're on to a winner.
