The 5 Best Spots For Pizza in London

London is known for many things: bustling markets, lovely tea rooms, charming royals. . . but pizza? A great slice isn't exactly among the city's crowning achievements. But spoiler alert: London actually has its fair share of delectable pizzerias. Tucked away in neighbourhoods like Shoreditch, Covent Garden, and even Golders Green, both ex-pats and Londoners can find a satisfying slice — whether you're fond of old-school Neapolitan parlours or doughy New York folds. Here's a look at the five best spots for grabbing pizza in London — all taste-tested and approved by a former Brooklynite (that would be me!).

If you're looking for something a bit more exotic than your standard margherita pizza, head to Homeslice. Serving up thin-crust pizza topped with seasonal ingredients like spiced lamb, kimchi, and barbecue beef brisket, its menu absolutely succeeds in balancing "tradition with innovation." Personally, I'd recommend trying the butternut squash, cavolo nero, goat's cheese, and nigella crumb pizza (it almost feels healthy). You can snag a single slice or 20-inch pie (ideal for sharing with two or three friends) in Shoreditch, Fitzrovia, City, or at its original outlet in Neal's Yard.

The London branch of this Neapolitan parlour (enjoyed by Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love) only serves two types of pizza: margherita and marinara. But based on the queues you'll often find outside of this Church Street establishment, the pizzaiolos at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele have surely mastered their craft. Its 20-inch pies are simple, saucy, and (as several Italian friends have informed me) the closest you'll find to authentic Neapolitan pizza in the United Kingdom.

Sure, kebab shops and burger joints get the job done, but nothing beats a cheesy, greasy slice of pizza after a night out on the town. Enter Voodoo Ray's. The slices are massive, with names like Porky's (covered in Cumberland sausage, stilton, and red onion) and King Tubby (with fennel and chilli sausage, kale, and caramelised onions). Most of Voodoo Ray's shops also have a pretty extensive collection of craft brews and beers to wash it all down. Stop by one of its locations in Dalston, Boxpark, Camden, or Peckham to grab an individual slice or 22-inch pie.

A raving Yelp review led me to That's Amore, and this teensy Italian spot in Golders Green did not disappoint. The menu boasts more than 25 pizza variations, ranging from the Siciliana (topped with aubergine, parmesan, and basil) to the Hawaii (a cult favourite with pineapple and ham) to its eponymous That's Amore pizza (featuring a decadent blend of wild truffles, cherry tomatoes, rocket, and parmesan; 10/10 would recommend), each of which offers a unique take on classic Italian flavours. Twelve-inch and 16-inch pies are available, and I'd suggest finishing off your meal with a little tiramisu (and perhaps some Prosecco) as well.

Launched by two New Yorkers, NY Fold's motto is "pizza like it oughta be." And with 40 percent more mozzarella than the average Neapolitan pizza (and slices that are about the size of your face), I'd say they're on the right track. I'm a fan of the Big Daddy (piled high with spinach, artichoke hearts, and caramelised onions), but meat-lovers will drool over the Butcher Shop (which includes bacon, pepperoni, sliced meatball, Cumberland sausage, and ham). It's also got Nutella-stuffed-and-smothered dessert pizzas, for those of us with a sweet tooth. All are available by the slice or in 16-inch and 20-inch pies.
