We're not saying that we're completely over gin (as if we would, there must be some we haven't tried yet), but we are in the mood to mix things up a bit. Perhaps it's the heatwave, or the trend for all things tropical, but rum is definitely having its moment in the sun. Whether you like it light or dark, it's definitely the drink to try this Summer. It's not just for mojitos — although we do love them — and some of the rums are delicious enough to drink straight up or over ice. Plus, the dark and spicy spirits taste delicious poured over vanilla ice cream. Dark Matter Spiced Rum
The first rum ever to be made in Scotland, Dark Matter Spiced Rum (£32) tastes of ginger and dark molasses, but there's a hint of green peppercorn in there, too. If you want a step up from your usual dark rums to something more adventurous, this is the one to try.
Rumbullion!
Of course the name is fun, but Rumbullion! (£36) will definitely pull its weight in your drinks cabinet. It's made in Kent (argh, that be the pirate garden of England), and it's pretty sweet with orange and vanilla getting in on the action.
Seawolf White Rum
Scotland is seriously upping its rum game. Seawolf White Rum (£34) hails from Scotland, but it's still totally tropical. Save this one for your piña coladas (and the inevitable dancing in the rain).
Goslings Black Seal Rum
Have you ever had a dark 'n' stormy cocktail? Was it made with Goslings Black Seal Rum (£25)? If it wasn't, you're in trouble. The rum company trademarked the cocktail name years ago, and bars and restaurants that make the drink without using their rum get a stern telling off.
Mother's Ruin Bitter Orange Rum
It could be argued that Mother's Ruin Bitter Orange Rum (£29) is a rum for people who don't really like rum. It's only 20 proof, which makes it feel more like a liqueur than a spirit. Despite this, we love it mixed with tonic as an alternative to gin, which really lets the Seville oranges and tangy marmalade flavour stand out.

One thing that rum definitely has over gin? Really silly pirate-themed bottles. Bombo Coconut and Caramel Rum (£26) is no exception to this fun little tradition. This is a sweet one, so pour it over ice and enjoy it neat. And definitely don't mix it with Coke.
Matugga Golden Rum
Now this is a seriously sophisticated rum. Matugga Golden Rum (£39) is one of the pricier rums on our list, but it's a premium spirit that will take your tiki tipple to a ten. It doesn't matter how swanky your rum is, you're still going to put it in a glass with a curly straw and a paper cocktail brolly.
Spytail Black Ginger Rum
Spytail Black Ginger Rum (£26) is very nearly black in colour, and it's certainly one for the ginger lovers. Rum barrels at their French distillery near Cognac are filled with ginger and spices, and you'd do well to mix this with fresh lime juice and a little bit of brown sugar.
Smith & Cross Rum
Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaican Rum (£36) is the rum company that the bar industry are getting excited about. This is a straight up Jamaican rum, and it's navy strength, too. It's a good all-rounder if you want a rum that you can sip neat or splash into a cocktail shaker.
Dead Man's Finger's Coffee Rum
Continuing the very silly names is Dead Man's Finger's Coffee Rum (£22), which actually hails from Cornwall and is from the owners of the famous Rum and Crab Shack. This is a twist on their caramel rum, and it's got a deep coffee hit. Ever tried a rum old fashioned before? This will work a treat.
