What's the Key Ingredient Missing From Your Cocktail? Gravy, Says KFC!

26/01/2018 - 11:23 AM

When faced with the question "what's your poison?" in a cocktail bar, it's likely that your response has been along the lines of "something with an elderflower twist", "anything with a bourbon base", or "a classic Old Fashioned, please". It's probably never been "what have you got with gravy?". This could all be about to change, thanks to KFC and its rediscovery of the "stocktail", a savoury take on cocktail hour. What makes KFC's stocktail a cut above the rest? It features the brand's "so good you can drink it" gravy.

Once a growing trend in the 1940s, the stocktail has made a comeback in Southern states of America (and in some parts of South London, apparently [1]). Now, KFC has teamed up with an expert mixologist to bring it to the masses with three recipes: "The Gravy Mary", "The Finger Lickin' Sour", and "The Southern Twist".

Patrick, KFC's mixologist of choice, explains "the key was to find flavours and ingredients which perfectly complimented the distinctive taste of KFC gravy" adding "for example, the Kentucky bourbon in The Southern Twist brings mellow, sweet spice notes to stand up against the savoury gravy. The herbal note of parsley on the rim brightens the sip with the brown sugar softening the kick of bourbon and uniting the flavours."

Grab a couple of gravy tubs, and read on for the recipes you can re-create at home that will have you ditching Dry January [2] immediately.

The Gravy Mary

Ingredients:
50ml vodka
20ml KFC gravy
Spice mix (20ml Worcester sauce, 3 drops Tabasco, 3 grinds white pepper, pinch of celery salt, pinch of paprika, half teaspoon horseradish cream)
15ml fresh lemon juice
90ml tomato juice
Celery and popcorn chicken to garnish

Without vodka, use the same quantities as above but with 140ml tomato juice.

Method: To create the spice mix, grab a tall glass and pour Tabasco sauce, Worcester sauce, white pepper, celery salt, paprika, and horseradish cream into it. Cover firmly and shake.

Next, add your vodka and spice mix and pour in the lemon juice and tomato juice, and mix again.

Add in KFC gravy to the mix, and stir all of the ingredients together. Then, pour into a fresh highball glass.

Finish with celery and a small skewer of popcorn chicken.

The Finger Lickin’ Sour

Ingredients:
100ml KFC gravy
400ml mescal
15ml cherry liqueur
25ml fresh lemon juice
10ml orange marmalade
Pinch of salt and pepper
1 egg white
Thyme sprig to garnish

Method: Pour the mescal and KFC gravy into a tall glass. Cover firmly and shake. Then place the glass into the freezer and freeze for three hours.

Once frozen, pour the gravy-infused mescal through a strainer and clean cloth into a fresh glass.

Squeeze the lemon into a glass, add the marmalade, salt and pepper, and egg white and shake again.

Pour the cocktail mixture into a martini glass and sprinkle with thyme to finish.

The Southern Twist

Ingredients: 50ml Kentucky Bourbon
60ml fresh hot KFC gravy
2 grinds black pepper
2 teaspoons granulated brown sugar
4 teaspoons dried parsley
Parsley and brown sugar rim to garnish

Method: Chop parsley and mix with brown sugar in a bowl. Then cut lemon and coat the rim of the glass with it, followed by the parsley and sugar mixture.

Add ice cubes and Kentucky Bourbon to the glass, followed by KFC gravy and mix.
