With 1,186 restaurants on the globe [3], many diehard fans flock to Nando's as much as once a week to enjoy their chicken dish of choice. But even the most dedicated peri-peri fans don't know everything about the former Chickenland. Read on to find out which member of the royal family is a fan, plus the one thing you should never do if you want to get a black card!

Its Roots

Nando's was founded by Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin in 1987 when they visited a restaurant called Chickenland. They liked the chicken so much they decided to buy the restaurant and make it their own. The first Nando's to open in the UK was in Ealing, London, but it was only a takeaway. It wasn't for another three years that an eat-in restaurant was opened.

The Tiny Details

Nando's' design is full of tiny details. For example, all headings are at an 87-degree angle [4] to pay homage to the year the first chain opened. The font is inspired by road signs throughout South Africa.

The Original Art

Although the peri-peri cuisine is Portuguese, Nando's was born in South Africa, which is celebrated in the art on the walls of the restaurants, which are contemporary Southern African [5] pieces that support emerging artists.

Prince William is a Fan!

Prince William is apparently a big fan [6] of Nando's. It's reported that he discovered the chain thanks to his security guard, who's an even bigger fan. We know the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are partial to takeaways [7] so it doesn't come as a surprise that he's a peri-peri-lover, too.

Black Card Secrets

A black card holder is entitled [8] to "one starter, one combo meal, one dessert and one soft drink, along with up to four friends. Sorry no free alcoholic drinks." If you want to get your hands on a black card and don't happen to be famous, your best bet is to try and prove you've been to all 1,186 Nando's restaurants [9] in the world. The one rule that will prevent you from ever getting a black card [10]? Asking for one!

Menu Hacks

Employees say that the peri-tamer on the kids menu [11] is a sweet BBQ dressing, and it's delicious. You can ask for it to be used on other menu items, too. Nando's also suggest putting the peri-peri salt on popcorn for a spicy snack at home [12].

Global restaurants

Other restaurants around the world include various countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe as well as the USA (much to our surprise!) with 40 restaurants in Illinois, Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
