Disney's Halloween High Tea Service Is Themed After Its Most Memorable Villains

24/08/2018 - 02:06 AM

When you think of high tea, you probably envision a group of people in their Sunday best sipping tea with their pinkies out and eating finger sandwiches from fancy plates. But this Halloween at Disneyland [1], things have taken a very dark (and dangerously clever) turn with an all-new villain-themed high tea service. Available beginning on Sept. 7 at Steakhouse 55 [2] at the Disneyland Hotel [3], this limited-edition activity is certainly worth booking in advance.

Disney drew inspiration from some its its best — or worst? — villains and created an entire spread that pays homage to them. Maleficent's "horns" make an appearance on the menu in the form of ruby red microgreens atop edamame-avocado smash on pumpernickel bread. The Lion King's Scar is a red pepper hummus-smeared sandwich that stands tall over the others, acting as an edible version of Pride Rock. Half the fun of making your way through each item is deciphering the connection to the character; the Disney food experts who created the menu left no detail unnoticed.

This time last year, Steakhouse 55 had a special high tea service, but it was just a general Halloween [4] theme. This year's villain theme heightens the experience even more, and it's a not-so-scary way to celebrate the season with your friends. Take a look at the details ahead, and plan on stopping by while it's on the menu from Friday through Sunday (from noon until 3 p.m.) until Oct. 31.

The High Tea Rundown

The tea service menu includes tiers of character-inspired sandwiches and sweets, each oozing with whimsy. Guests will also choose their tea from an array of options including apple pie green tea, coconut black tea, lychee green tea, and mulled spice. Plus, each table comes with a different flower arrangement based on a villain.

A Plate Full of Dangerous (and Delicious) Villains

The aforementioned Scar-inspired sandwich stands tall in the middle, while a mini prime rib sandwich with cream of horseradish, peppadew peppers, and pickles on toasted sourdough joins the party as Beauty and the Beast's Gaston.

Can You Spot Maleficent?

Sink your teeth into the Maleficent-themed bite: a pumpernickel slice with a dollop of edamame-avocado smash, sweet chili, bacon, and fried ruby red microgreens.

The Ursula Egg Is Especially Devilish

Yes, that is a deviled egg, and yes, it screams "Ursula," doesn't it? Disney got creative with this one and experimented with ways to turn the egg white a purplish black, settling on a combination of squid ink and blueberry puree. The spooky deviled egg is filled with beet puree (mixed with the yolk) and topped with tokibo caviar and seaweed.

A Mean Lineup of Sweets

The Oogie Boogie popcorn bucket [6] was all the rage last year, but that was before we saw these Oogie Boogie chocolate-covered strawberries — could they be any cooler?

You'll also want to sink your teeth into the "poison" apple, which is a harmless combination of cinnamon Bavarian mousse and salted caramel.

Off With Their (Chocolate-Covered Strawberry) Heads

Oogie Boogie suddenly seems less terrifying when you're about to bite his head off — the Queen of Hearts sits nearby practically screaming at you to do it.

Gingerbread Cookies Get a Voodoo Spin

There might be a little bit of voodoo magic involved in these Dr. Facilier-inspired voodoo doll gingerbread cookies.

What's a High Tea Service Without Scones?

Least scary of all is the plate of scones to satisfy your sweet tooth. There's a candy corn-shaped pastry with maple and pecan icing and a chocolate chip scone with chocolate icing.

Head to Steakhouse 55 While It's Available

The villain-themed high tea won't last long. Find it at Steakhouse 55 from Sept. 7 through Oct. 31 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m.
