12 Vegan Junk Food Joints to Get You Through Veganuary

12/12/2019 - 06:10 PM

As all vegans [1] know: being vegan isn't boring. It's not all fruit and vegetables as it's so often stereotyped, and vegan eaters like treating themselves to a healthy dose of calories as much as any carnivore. So when news broke this week that McDonald's [2] is finally jumping on the vegan bandwagon and releasing a meal for the plant-based eaters [3] among us, it only made sense to spend my time working out exactly what other vegan junk food to eat while we wait.

In my book, any store or restaurant that does delivery or takeaway counts as fast food. While I'm a huge pizza fan, there's so much more to vegan junk food than that. Whether you prefer burgers and fries, chicken nuggets, or doner kebab, click your way through the very best vegan fast food joints ahead, then find your vice and immediately make dinner plans (or don't, and order in instead).

Truffler Burger at Byron Burgers

Byron Burgers might be the last place you would expect to find vegan food, but trust me when I say their 'Truffler' burger is better than the real deal. It's smothered in vegan truffle cheese fondue and truffle mayonnaise, so if you like truffle, you're going to love this. They also do a couple of other vegan burgers including the 'Betnik', complete with a tasty beetroot falafel patty.

The Philly at The Vurger Co.

If you eat plant-based full time, you'll know all about The Vurger Co. Serving up a 100-percent plant-based menu, you'll find vegan burgers, vegan shakes, and a vegan Philly, but it's their vegan tater tots that will keep you coming back more.

The Halo Burger at Halo Burger

If there's one thing that could turn me vegan, it's the Halo Burger at Halo Burger. Not only does it look exactly like a regular burger, but it also tastes like one too — only better. Simple but seriously tasty, it's vegan fast food at its best.

Quinoa Taco Salad at Eat by Chloe

Eat by Chloe's plant-based menu is so good, you won't be able to decide what to order. While my favourite takeaway option is the Quinoa Taco Salad, most fans head there for the vegan fish and chips, which are made up of crispy tofu, chips, mushy peas, and tartar sauce.

Vegan Chick'n at Temple of Seitan

Temple of Seitan is a vegan institute, serving up their signature crispy vegan chicken in the form of burgers, wings, and popcorn bites. If you've just transitioned to a vegan diet [4], this should be your first stop.

Falafel and Hummus Platter at Go Falafel

Your idea of fast food probably doesn't include chickpeas, but the Falafel and Hummus Platter at Go Falafel is always a good option when you want your food fast. Eat the falafels when they're hot, or at least still warm from the fryer, and they'll taste so much more unhealthy than they actually are.

Vegatsu at Wagamama

I haven't actually tried the Vegatsu (vegan katsu curry) at Wagamama, but based on the social media comments alone, I can tell it's the perfect Sunday night takeaway to curl up on the couch with. Other vegan menu items include mixed mushrooms and panko aubergine hirata steamed buns, yasai pad thai, and "bang bang" cauliflower.

Here Comes Truffle Pizza at Purezza

In case you missed it, I'm obsessed with truffle, so it comes as no surprise that I'm obsessed with the Here Comes Truffle at vegan pizzeria Purezza. Featuring a black truffle base with mozzarella, wood-smoked tofu, and mixed wild forest mushrooms, I strongly suggest you dine alone so you don't have to share.

Doner Box at What the Pitta

Doner boxes are almost the epitome of junk food, and What the Pitta's vegan doner boxes are no different. Using spiced soya pieces in place of meat, it's the only thing you'll ever want to eat after a big night out.

Children of the Corndog at V Rev Vegan Diner

If dog bites breaded in flaming hot Cheetos don't make you appreciate vegan junk food, then I don't know what will. From the bites to the burger, you can't go wrong at V Rev Vegan Diner.

Mushroom Broth Ramen at Bone Daddies

Despite eating meat, I often find myself ordering Bone Daddies' Mushroom Broth Ramen over the classic pork options because it is just that good. Rich and full of flavour, they don't skimp on the veggies or noodles, and you can choose to have it with or without an egg, meaning it's the perfect dish for carnivores, vegans, and vegetarians alike.

Kebab Wrap at Mog's

Mog's vegan kebab wraps are dangerous. They are so tasty, you'll want to eat two. Instead, polish off your wrap then order one of their cracking vegan desserts. They have brownies, cookie dough, and churros!
