Bliss on Toast Is the Easy and Delicious Recipe You Need Right Now

13/04/2020 - 09:25 PM

During a recent scroll through Instagram, a lovely photo of a piece of toast topped with delicious ingredients like courgette, white beans, and pesto caught my eye. It was made by none other than the fabulous Prue Leith from The Great British Baking Show [1], and in her post, she explained that in her house, Sunday is always "Bliss on Toast" day. And that's exactly what it sounds like: you top a piece of toast with ingredients of your choice for a delicious, blissful snack [2].

The idea is incredibly easy and diverse, as it only takes some leftovers or digging through your freezer or cabinets to find some goodies. Using the ingredients she can find, Prue just toasts a piece of bread, adds her toppings, and enjoys. And it really can be anything (any time of year), as she even mentioned using Christmas pudding with cream and blackberries! So whether you're a sweet or savory type of person, you can customise this snack to you.

With all of my homebody-ness right now [3], I was up for the challenge to try re-creating Bliss on Toast for myself. Keep reading to see three versions I came up with!

Round 1: Leftover Madras Curry Chicken

Utilising the previous dinner's leftover curry chicken, I jazzed it up a bit by adding raisins for a little more sweetness and texture. I toasted a piece of store-bought whole-wheat toast and topped it with some greens, the chicken and raisin mixture, and spicy green sauce.

Verdict: Delicious

Round 2: Leftover Sausage and Courgette With Pasta Sauce

I decided to warm up up the topping rather than have a cold Bliss on Toast, as it was a little grey outside. I topped the slice of toast with another layer of greens, leftover pasta sauce with chicken sausage and veggies, a bit of feta cheese, and a splash of balsamic.

Verdict: Everyone knows pasta sauce is always better the next day. This meal was even better than the original dish!

Round 3: Sweet Bliss on Toast

Savory was working for me, but for round three, I decided to go for a sweet treat. I pulled out a chocolate pudding cup, banana slices, and some pecans for a little afternoon snack.

Verdict: It needed a dash of salt, but after that, it was satisfying, creamy, and chocolaty. It almost reminded me of Nutella on toast, which I lived for as a kid.

Prue Leith's Bliss on Toast

Prue shared a few ideas for her family's Sunday meal [5] on her website. The one pictured is topped with grilled courgette, white beans (haricots), and cashew pesto. Yum!

Bliss on Toast is exactly what I was looking for as I continue to cook at home: it's incredibly quick to make but changes up previous meals with little fuss or effort. Maybe it won't work with every dish I make, but I'm willing to continue to give it a go! I ate one toast while I chatted with my 4-year-old niece on FaceTime — she asked me what I was eating, and I explained what it was. Bliss isn't in her vocabulary just yet, so I told her it was Magic Toast. She's been eating a lot of Magic Toast ever since.

If you've already watched The Great British Baking Show [6] for the third or fourth time, give these other baking shows a chance [7] (personally, I'm a big fan of Zumbo's Just Desserts).
