I Tried This 6-Ingredient Cake Batter Oatmeal and the Sprinkles Are a Sweet Breakfast Treat

Sure, birthdays only come around once a year, but sometimes I need a morning treat to help me celebrate all the unbirthdays in between, and this cake batter oatmeal is the perfect gift (if I do say so myself). Created by food blogger Carleigh Bodrug, aka @plantyou on Instagram, the creamy oatmeal recipe only calls for six ingredients you might already have in your pantry and only takes five minutes to make.

Carleigh explained that the recipe was inspired by Dino Eggs oatmeal, which was right up there with EZ Squirt Funky Purple Ketchup, Cosmic Brownies, and Ring Pops as one the coolest snacks a kid could get their hands on in the '90s and early aughts. In preparation for my next birthday, I gave into my inner 5-year-old and tried the oats for myself. And as someone with a dinosaur-sized sweet tooth, I can assure you that they're worth the dishes.

I can't say the flavour reminded me too much of Dino Eggs oatmeal — granted, it has been a while since I've had the original. It's possible I may have been a little heavy-handed with the sprinkles, but I also think the oatmeal would pair nicely with an extra scoop of almond butter, some chopped nuts, or a few swirls of whipped cream if you're looking to celebrate. The breakfast itself added a little something special to my morning routine and definitely put me in a better mood, like any good birthday (or unbirthday) treat. See how to make the cake batter oatmeal for yourself ahead.
