These Supplement-Infused Latte Mixes Might Just Break My Coffee-Shop Habit

27/09/2021 - 11:05 PM

I've never met a coffee shop I didn't like. Whether I'm grabbing an extra-large drip coffee before work or indulging in a mid-afternoon latte, I tend to see these trips as a treat — also known as a bribe for cleaning out my inbox or folding a load of laundry.

The only issue is this habit can get a bit pricey, especially since I tend to favour local cafes where the drinks cost $6 or $7 a pop. So when I got the opportunity to try Clevr Blends [1]' range of superfood-enhanced latte mixes, I was all in. Since the brand makes matcha, chai, and coffee latte mixes — all drinks I love to order from baristas — I was hopeful that I would be able to find a more cost-effective way to get the coffee-shop experience at home.

Plus, like many trendy cafes, Clevr Blends adds supplements to its lattes. Each variety includes probiotics to support digestion, ashwagandha for stress reduction, lion's mane mushrooms for brain health, and reishi mushrooms for immune support. Although I'm not a huge supplement person, I figured it might be a nice way to enhance the energy boost I'm already getting from caffeine.

These drink mixes are also incredibly easy to make. All you need to do is blend the powder with eight ounces of water, then serve however you like — hot, iced, and with your milk of choice. Several latte breaks later, I'm happy to say I've found my new at-home afternoon treat. Keep scrolling for the lowdown on my favourite Clevr Blends flavours.

Clevr Blends Matcha Superlatte

I love matcha everything — ice cream, mochi, cookies, the list goes on — so I was particularly excited to try the Matcha Superlatte [2] ($28), and it did not disappoint. The matcha flavour is bold yet balanced: It's not overly earthy, sweet, or bitter, and the green tea taste also covers up any underlying taste of the supplements. Clevr Blends uses a combination of oat milk and coconut cream in all of their drink mixes, and the slight coconut flavour complemented the match particularly well.

While I like the matcha served hot or iced, I'm partial to making an at-home iced latte. First, I use a frother to blend the powder with warm water in a tall glass. Once the latte gets nice and frothy, I drop in a few ice cubes and top with a splash of milk for a little extra decadence.

Clevr Blends Chai Superlatte

There's something so comforting about a warm chai latte. Plus, I've always found the slight heat from the ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, and other spices gives me an instant energy boost. Clevr Blends Chai Superlatte [3] ($28) is no exception: It strikes a lovely balance between sweet and spicy, and also gets beautifully foamy when frothed. I could definitely taste a hint of an earthy flavour from the mushrooms in the chai latte, but didn't mind it. You could also enjoy the chai latte over ice, but I found that serving it hot brought out the full flavour of all of the spices.

The overall verdict? I'll definitely be reaching for Clevr Blends latte mixes on those afternoons when I need a little extra pick-me-up. And since each package makes 14 lattes, each serving only costs $2 — a much more affordable option than the fancy cafe down the block.
