Ina Garten Shares a Recipe For a Giant Cosmopolitan Cocktail

Ina Garten Is Out Here Making Giant Cosmos, and I Love This Journey For Her

Ina Garten is showing us all how to thrive in this period of social distancing. The beloved chef has been busy slathering her freezer waffles with peanut butter and jelly, making ramen noodles from the pantry look gourmet, and, perhaps most importantly, enjoying her fair share of adult beverages. Truly sticking to the "it's 5 o'clock somewhere" mindset, Ina took to Instagram around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to share her favourite cocktail recipe — one that could easily serve four to five people but is solely intended for her, no less.

Sporting one of her signature blue button-down shirts, the Barefoot Contessa host began, "During these stressful times, it's really important to keep traditions alive. My favourite tradition is the cocktail hour." Same, Ina . . . same. She launched into her instructions for whipping up a cosmopolitan drink, pouring the ingredients into a giant glass pitcher while hilariously remarking, "You never know who's gonna stop by . . . wait a minute, nobody's stopping by."

Ina's famous cosmos call for the following four ingredients:

  • 2 cups of vodka ("good vodka," she suggested)
  • 1 cup of Cointreau, Triple Sec, or any kind of orange liqueur
  • 1 cup of cranberry juice cocktail
  • 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice ("it's gotta be freshly squeezed," she reiterated)

Once all the liquids were in the pitcher, she transferred most of the concoction into an oversize cocktail shaker that was half-filled with ice. "You have to shake it for 30 seconds," Ina instructed, quipping, "You have lots of time; it's not a problem." While mixing away, the queen of witty commentary added, "During a crisis, cocktail hour can be almost any hour," before pulling out the true pièce de résistance: a positively enormous martini glass to hold her light-pink drink.

I don't know about you, but now I can't stop dreaming about doing a virtual happy hour with Ina. Perhaps my invite won't get lost in the mail next time!
