SweeTarts Are, Hands Down, the Best Halloween Candy
Halloween candy is a sacred thing. Much like the holiday itself, a lot of the spooky-themed treats only come along once a year for a limited time, so savoring every last bite is essential. And you can get said candy from just about anywhere — in your office's kitchen, at your friend's place, or just by buying your own stash at the store. And once you grow out of trick-or-treating, choosing which candy you enjoy is a very purposeful decision. You want to really love it, and you know what I love the most? SweeTarts.
OK, I know what you might be thinking — out of all the Halloween candy, you're going with SweeTarts?! — but hear me out.
Sure, I could go for an oversize Snickers bar or vouch for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, but SweeTarts are honestly so good, and I think they deserve more respect. Not only are they super tasty, but they also come in perfect serving sizes (but, let's be real, I'll eat multiple in one sitting). You don't have to worry about them ever melting — I'm looking at you Hershey's with almonds — or getting squished to the point of no return. I also find them to be very elusive, which is a strange quality to use when describing candy, but I can't seem to ever find them at my local deli or drug store. I don't know if it's just me, but it's like they don't exist outside of that Halloween window (or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?). That makes them feel more special and delicious.
With the perfect balance of sweet and tart, hence the name, the SweeTart was like gold when I was younger. Whenever I would acquire some of this delicious candy during my trick-or-treat rounds, I would hoard it for months. They would remain perfectly stacked in my kitchen pantry and would only be traded with my sisters if they could come up with my other Halloween favourite — Almond Joys (only full-size, of course).
But now that I'm older, what I love most about SweeTarts is their very interesting backstory. During the rise in popularity of candy like Pixy Stix and Lik-M-Aid products (Fun Dip), the candy was created in 1962 as a response to a demand for less messy candy. Without using flavoured powder, SweeTarts still capture the same tangy taste, but instead of a stained tongue or finger, you get a simple, compact sugar disc. And, really, what's not to love about a compact sugar disc?
SweeTarts, I see you. Everyone may not love you like I do, but you're my forever favourite.
