Let's get one thing out of the way: I'm a #KATYCAT through and through. So it was a delight to see that Katy Perry and I shared a spiritual bond when she Instagrammed an order for Doreen Virtue's Angel Cards. I'm familiar with Doreen thanks to my spiritual mum who hooked me up with a pack when I started university in 2011. I was touched, but at first, I have to admit I was sceptical. I'm not religious and I consider myself a spirituality "hype girl," which means I'm basically in it for the crystals and not much else. But when I found myself up against deadlines and mean girls, it was my deck of Angel Cards that kept me on the straight and narrow.
For those unfamiliar with these heavenly cards, Doreen describes them as "an ancient, time-honoured way to connect with angels." Working similarly to tarot cards, they allow the user to ask questions to angels with a current situation in mind. In turn, they will receive specific and to-the-point readings with detailed step-by-step guidance as opposed to ambiguous one-word meanings.
Picking out a card when I was feeling blue, or laying out a quick spread when needing direction from my "Messages From Your Angels" Oracle Cards (£14), allowed me to pose questions without having to rope in my peers. The cards I pulled, and have continued to pull, always seem accurate and relevant to my situation. Whether it's the answer I want to hear or not, it's always what I know is true deep in my heart. I may have initially questioned some messages, but more often than not, weeks later I made sense of them during "oh yeah, oh wow, oh sh*t!" moments. Beyond giggling at Archangel Michael's get-up and originally thinking he was rocking the devil horn hand gesture (sorry mum), I felt supported in finding my purpose with these cards by my side.
My advice? Whether you're battling through coursework, family struggles, or just a bad week, make like Katy Perry and consult your Angel Cards (and/or play "Roar" on repeat). Besides, she's totally an angel herself anyway. . .
