Every year, big retailers in the UK battle it out to have the most memorable Christmas TV advert. John Lewis famously throws everything at its annual festive ad campaign and often comes out the winner, but this year, a rather large spanner has been thrown in the works by Renault.
Though the French car manufacturer's new advert for the Clio has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas, its November release makes it an instant rival to all those festive ads currently being released, and it definitely tugs at the heartstrings just as much as any carefully crafted Christmas ad. It even has the sweet cover version of a classic song, set to a version of Oasis's "Wonderwall". Entitled "30 years in the making," the moving ad follows the evolving relationship of two girls who meet when one travels from the UK to France on a school trip. Over the years, they reunite, and their relationship grows up as they do, though they face some battles along the way. It's impossible not to feel emotional watching the sweet love story unfold, and it's already got plenty of support from the LGBTQ+ community. Renault Clio ads have always had something of a reputation for being memorable (remember Papa et Nicole?), but this one tops the lot. You'll want to make sure you're wearing waterproof mascara before you watch.
