Busy Philipps Gets Candid About Her Abortion at Age 15: "Every Woman Deserves Compassion and Care"

Busy Philipps admits she doesn't like to get political on her E! late-night show, Busy Tonight, but Georgia's restrictive abortion bill struck a chord with her that she could not ignore. She spoke candidly about her own abortion as a teenager on her May 7 episode, just a few short days after announcing the show's cancellation.

Earlier that day, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy — before many women even realise they're pregnant. In response to this news, the 39-year-old actress opened up to her audience about her own abortion experience, which she previously revealed in her memoir, This Will Only Hurt a Little.

"I know that people feel very strongly about abortion, but let me just say this: women and their doctors are in the best position to make informed decisions about what is best for them. Nobody else. Nobody," she said. "No bill that criminalizes abortion will stop anyone from making this incredibly personal choice, but these laws will put more women at risk. Every woman deserves compassion and care, not judgment and interference when it comes to their own bodies."

"I had an abortion when I was 15 years old, and I'm telling you this because I'm genuinely really scared for women and girls all over the country," continued Philipps, now a mom of two daughters. She acknowledged that discussing this topic is a "hard left turn" and "kind of jarring" compared to her show's regular content, but "that's what being a f*cking woman is."
