Sadiq Khan Says Misogyny Will Be Recorded as a Hate Crime

Misogyny Is Officially a Hate Crime, Sadiq Khan Confirmed

On 17 March, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, shared a tweet confirming that misogyny will now be recorded by all police as a hate crime. The news came about after ministers were under pressure to toughen the laws surrounding protection of women, following the murder of Sarah Everard. As reported by The Telegraph, seven constabularies across the UK currently do record misogyny as a hate crime, but following yesterday's ruling, all 43 constabularies will now be required to do the same.

Khan's tweet stated that "misogyny will now be recorded as a hate crime — a HUGE victory for everyone involved in this cross-party campaign. It's time for every Londoner to call out sexist and misogynistic attitudes wherever they are found — in the workplace, school, on the streets or public transport."

Baroness Williams also said that "I will advise the House that, on an experimental basis, we will ask police forces to record and identify any crimes of violence against the person, including stalking and harassment and sexual offences, where the victim perceives it to have been motivated by a hostility based on their sex, which, as I have said, can then inform longer-term decisions."
