Baby Born in a Helicopter Over England

This Mom Gave Birth Inside a Helicopter at 1,400 Feet Over England

Alicia and Sandy MacDonald were at a wedding on the Isles of Scilly, a remote island off the shores of Cornwall, England, when Alicia went into early labor with her second child. Because there was no midwife on-call on the island that Saturday night, the Coast Guard was contacted to fly Alicia to the Royal Cornwall Hospital; so into a helicopter Alicia, Sandy, and a midwife — who trained at the Coast Guard base for a scenario just like this one — went. However, Alicia's baby boy must have sensed the excitement on-board and decided he just couldn't wait to get to the hospital — he was delivered by the midwife inside the helicopter at 1,400 feet over Cornwall.

"Baby Torran was delivered mid-flight after mom Alicia, who'd been visiting the Isles of Scilly to conduct the ceremony for a friend's wedding, went into labor earlier than expected," the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust shared on its Facebook page. "Torran was delivered aboard the helicopter by midwife Linda Benson. Alicia said, 'Torran is doing fine and we'd like to thank the Coast Guard, the midwife, and the midwifery team at the hospital.'"

To capture the moment even more perfectly, some of Torran's first photographs were taken while he wore a blue helicopter onesie. This little guy has quite the birth story to share when he's older!
