Halova Nappy Bag

"I underestimated the value of pockets when I first started searching for the perfect nappy bag. I was focussed more on style and wanted something that didn't scream rash cream or poopy nappy. I found a number of backpacks I liked, fortunately, but without insulated pockets to keep breast milk and formula cold, they left a lot to be desired. The longer I carried on with my limiting bag, the more I learned about the types of amenities I truly needed. And it's as if the Halova Nappy Bag ($36) was listening to me the entire time.

Not only does this bag have over 3,600 reviews on Amazon, but it's as if the brand was listening to the needs of other parents as well. Let's start with what it can hold: a LOT. There is a large main compartment that fits a surprising amount of stuff (just watch the videos of parents piling things inside), separate storage pockets, including insulated pockets, and even a wet-clothes pocket so you can keep washcloths or dirty clothing separate. There's even a clutch side pocket that can be used to dispense napkins." — Rebecca Brown, senior editor, Shopping and Moms

Britax Back Seat Mirror

"It didn't take long for me to learn how much I dislike driving alone with my little guy in the backseat. Britax's Back Seat Mirror ($19) alleviates much of the stress of the unknown when your new baby is behind you, and your eyes are on the road. Plus, it's added entertainment for when they're a bit older — babies love looking at themselves in the mirror." — Lisa Horten, contributing editor

EZPZ Happy Mat

"The genius folks at EZPZ were well-aware of 2-year-olds' predilection for playing with their food when they created the Happy Mat ($25), an all-in-one placemat and sectional plate that captures everything. Another clever bonus? It suctions directly to the table, making it nearly impossible for tiny hands to tip over. The food-grade silicone mat is built to last — it's bendable and flexible, and the vibrant colour doesn't fade or deteriorate — and can be tossed right in the dishwasher. If you have more than one mouth to feed, simply fill each mat with fruit and veggies and stack them on top of each other to carry to the table. Easy-peasy, indeed." — Kate Schweitzer

MiaMily Carrier

"While there are many types of carriers, the MiaMily Carrier ($129) has a built-in ergonomic hip seat, a hidden storage pocket, and a seat for your baby to sit on, which helps redistribute weight. I'd heard friends complain that they wished their carriers had pockets. The Hipster Plus has a big pocket at the base of the seat that fits nappies, cell phones, and even a small bottle, so when I walk her, I'm usually hands- and nappy-bag-free" — RB

Ubbi Nappy Pail

"Whether you have a bundle of joy on the way or are knee-deep in the land of nappies and wipes, any parent can smell a poopy nappy a mile away. Likely, your little one will tip you off about what's hiding underneath their PJs — they'll typically squirm and wail to get you to notice — but if you don't have a good pail in the nursery, you're just going to end up smelling the nappy in the room after it's removed, and this smell only becomes more offencive when you close the door and open it up later.

Do yourself a favour and toss whatever trash system you have now and get the Ubbi Nappy Pail ($80). Yes, it's pricier than most pails, but you already know what most pails get you: funk floating through the air.

The Ubbi is made of steel, which traps moisture and smells, and what's even better is that you don't have to buy special bags for it. Any trash bag works. I use our regular kitchen trash bags in there and they work just fine. It's also a sleek and thin system, so I can nestle it neatly next to the changing table and it doesn't jut out in an obtrusive way. If you're thinking about your registry essentials, I highly recommend adding this." — RB

Ergobaby Compact Stroller Metro Ergobaby

"Ergobaby's newest stroller, the compact Metro ($299), is a must-have for city-dwellers, those constantly on the go, and basically any parent who wants a stroller with a simple one-handed fold that leads to a small and lightweight bundle that's easy to bring onto public transportation, take in and out of cars, or store in an aeroplane overhead bin. It comes with black, grey (pictured), or blue and is super comfy for baby, so you certainly won't be sacrificing their comfort for a compact and sleek style." — Alessia Santoro, editor, Family

Zutano "Stay-On" Booties

"A few months after my baby was born, a friend mailed me a belated gift — one she said she gives to all the new moms in her life. When I opened the box and saw a pair of tiny fleece booties, I groaned. I'd already given up trying to put my infant in socks or shoes, despite the chilly Fall weather, because they constantly slipped off her feet, and by the end of a 10-minute stroll to the park, one of the pair would go completely missing. When this friend called to be sure I'd received them, she probably could sense the disinterest in my voice because she quickly flew into a monologue she'd clearly given to many mamas before me. They've quickly become my go-to baby shower gift. She said: 'These are the best baby booties in existence! Trust me! They have literally never fallen off my child. They're like socks and shoes all rolled into one. So easy. You have to try them and tell me what you think. You're going to thank me, I promise.' She was right.

The original Zutano 'Stay-On' Booties ($21) are soft and flexible and snap securely around the foot at the ankle, which keeps them snug on even the squirmiest of infant feet. Plus, the brand's signature two-snap closure adjusts so there's plenty of room to grow (the booties come in sizes 3M, 6M, 12M, and 18M, but I miraculously managed to get by with one 12-month pair for the first year or so). What's more, I could actually put socks on underneath the Zutanos, and I'd never lose a single pair!" — Kate Schweitzer

Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys

"I still remember the first time I wondered if my daughter was teething. I don't know exactly what month it was — she was tiny, I know that — but I couldn't tell if her first teeth were coming in. It quickly became obvious that her little gums were in pain when I saw the first small white spikes peek through her gumline. I tried everything, from cold towels to organic teething rattles to rubbing her gums with my clean fingers. The doctor told me I could give her Tylenol, and nudged me to keep trying out different teething toys. I finally found one that worked.

The Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys ($4) toy is an Amazon besteller with a beaming 3,400 reviews. But that isn't what sold me. It was the fact that this toy went into the refrigerator. I thought that aspect was genius.

The set of keys is visually entertaining for a baby, and each one is filled with a gel substance that cools nicely when you stick it in the fridge. We have a dog at home, so I had to be extra careful that the dog didn't mistake it for one of her toys and puncture the plastic, but other than that, this thing worked wonders. It's BPA-, phthalate-, PVC-, and latex-free, and when she grew tired of gumming it, I just gave her a new key. The fun would start all over again." — RB

Hatch Baby Rest

"Here's what I love about the Hatch Baby Rest ($60). I am able to set programs based on her schedule. Right now we have a bedtime program, which runs every day from 7:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. with the dim light and ocean sounds. We have a "Time to Rise" program that turns on a pink light at 7 a.m. to let our daughter know that it's an acceptable time for her to wake up. She's still learning what "Time to Rise" means, but we'll get there! And we have it turn for her naps on the weekends.

It's synced to my phone via Bluetooth, so I can make adjustments as needed without stepping inside her bedroom.

It's small and lightweight, which makes it easy to pack on holidays.

We've been able to adapt it to our daughter's needs. She initially was okay sleeping in a dark room, so we'd have the light turn off after two hours. Now she needs the nightlight, so we simply changed the settings and keep the light on all night. It is one of those rare products that I know would have been good when she was an infant, and is still useful 2.5 years later." — Stacy Herscher, director, Social and Partnerships

Puj Snug

"After moving my son from the sink to the tub, one of my biggest concerns was hitting his head on the tap. So many spout covers are made from hard plastic or rubber! But the Puj Soft Spout Cover ($10) does a great job protecting noggins while still looking cute!" — Rebecca Gruber, vice president, Native

Little Partners Learning Tower

"After a particularly painful dinner, a memory of this product recommendation came to mind: Within a week, the Little Partners Learning Tower ($200) was at our door.

While it doesn't help with the cleaning or negotiating, it has completely changed our family's routine when it comes to cooking dinner. Our daughter now happily stands at the counter and watches me cook, or just hangs out and snacks, while I get to move around the kitchen freely. It may not have instilled the best habits, since she often likes to eat while standing in the Partner, but sometimes, you just gotta keep your 2-year-old happy.

She loves climbing in and out of it on her own, so I like to think it's instilled a little extra mobility and sense of independence for her too. We've been using it since she was around 18 months old and, with the adjustable height, I imagine we'll be using it until she's at least 3. At $200, the price was definitely a bit of an investment, but it has been totally worth it for our family." — SH

Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo

"While the Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo ($105) not the easiest thing to look at — it's admittedly enormous and that seat is the brightest thing I've ever seen — our daughter loves jumping in it and spinning the zoo animals around in circles. She swats at the canopy of leaves that hang overhead, and continues to build strength by holding herself up unassisted. I've even read reviews from parents who said that their kids loved jumping in it so much that they jumped themselves to sleep, though we haven't gotten to that point yet. We use it daily and there are so many things for her to explore I don't think she'll ever bore." — RB

Dockatot

"As I approached the end of my pregnancy, I wanted to know from friends — from mom friends, specifically — what item they just couldn't live without. Not what was the most Instagrammable or the cheapest (certainly those things are important, no doubt) but what single thing made their life easier . . . made Earth keep rotating. There was no hesitation in their voices, no moment of uncertainty when they had to think it through. The answer poured right out of their mouths like syrup: Dockatot ($175).

I wanted to find out why so many moms loved it, and why there were just as many experts advising against using it. The distinction to me seemed to be in how it was being used. As a co-sleeper, I could see why parents were being cautious about bringing it into their beds. But the product passed numerous safety tests and has clear warnings indicating how misuse can potentially lead to suffocation. I didn't plan on misusing it.

I wasn't going to put it in the crib, or rely on it as a main sleeping device. I wanted to "dock" my daughter in it so that I could get things done. I wanted a place where she could fall asleep (under supervision) that would be easy to move her around so that I had the freedom to move around too.

I made a rule that I'd never fall asleep if she was in it.

From day 1, my baby loved being in the soft, cushiony DockaTot. I think something about the pillowy sides created a womb-like environment. She napped in it safely, and I always kept an eye on her to keep her face out of the side structures. Sometimes she'd nestle her head too close for my comfort and I'd rotate her face away so that I could see her nose or mouth easily. Hardly an inconvenience. She was happy. I was happy." — RB
