Yep, Just Like Your Kids, Royal Kids Also Wear Hand-Me-Downs — Here's the Proof

20/08/2019 - 04:20 PM

Just like any other family, royal kids sometimes wear hand-me-downs — some as old as 30 years. If you ask us, there's nothing that compares to a good hand-me-down [1] — kids just grow too quickly to spend hundreds of pounds on clothes over and over again, right? The royals agree. It's not just Kate and Meghan [2] rewearing outfits, it's the youngest royals as well.

A few items are shared for ceremonial reasons (like the royal christening gown [3]), but others are just your everyday outfit recycling [4]. Some of the clothes we see Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis in have been passed down between siblings or, in a couple of cases, over multiple generations [5]. We've rounded up a few of the most notable instances of royal hand-me-downs — see how many you've noticed before!

During his first royal tour in 2014 [6], baby George was spotted wearing a buttoned-up white cardigan. He was the first royal to wear this knit, but not the last.

Princess Charlotte on Her First Birthday Wearing Prince George's Cardi

Kensington Palace released a set of photos in 2016 to commemorate Princess Charlotte's first birthday [7]. Eagle-eyed observers noticed that the white cardigan she was wearing in the portraits was the same one that her older brother had worn two years earlier.

In 1984, Prince William appeared at Trooping the Colour [8] for the first time, wearing a blue romper we would see again 31 years later.

At Trooping the Colour in 2016 [11], Prince George again wore one of his father's hand-me-down outfits. This time he recycled the outfit worn by Prince William at Prince Harry's christening.

Prince George in Australia in 2014 Wearing Striped Shorts

During his first royal trip, Prince George wore a pair of red-and-white striped shorts with a bright red jumper. The jumper hasn't been seen since, but the shorts have reappeared [12].

Prince Louis at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2019 Wearing Prince George's Shorts

The Cambridges shared several photos of their family exploring Kate's garden at the Chelsea Flower Show [13]. Prince Louis can be seen wearing the same red-and-white striped shorts that his brother appeared in five years before.
