Michelle Obama Mother's Day Instagram Message 2019

Michelle Obama Celebrates Her Mom's Example With a Beautiful Mother's Day Message

Michelle Obama may be the former (forever) first lady, but her mama, Marian Robinson, definitely keeps her humble. We know how close Michelle and her mother are, so it's no surprise that she couldn't wait until Mother's Day to thank Marian for being an amazing mom. On Friday, Michelle shared a photo of herself sandwiched between her daughters Sasha and Malia on a boat in Venice, and a few days later, she shared another photo to celebrate her mom on Mother's Day.

"Mom, thank you for kindling that fire within me, and for your example as a mother and a grandmother to our girls," she captioned the snap of her mother and daughters. "We would never be who we are today without you."

Michelle began her Mother's Day celebration a few days early, when she shared this message on Instagram. "With #MothersDay just a couple days away, I find myself thinking a lot about the way my mother raised me," Michelle wrote in the caption of the photo she shared Friday. "And even though our family was crammed into a tiny apartment, one of the greatest gifts she gave me was the freedom to explore and develop into my own person. For instance, even though we didn't have much money, she and my dad cobbled enough money together to send me on a high-school trip to Paris, which opened up the world to me in so many ways."

Michelle continued by explaining how she's taking those lessons into her own role as a mother. "Now that I'm raising kids of my own, I wanted to pass that lesson on to my own girls. I've been so fortunate to be able to travel with Sasha and Malia all across the country and around the world — experiences my mother never would have dreamed of back when I was their age."

Her takeaway is something that we can all appreciate: "But though the settings may be different, the message is the same, and it's one I hope mothers everywhere pass on to their daughters — in seeking out new perspectives and reaching outside of our comfort zones, we can discover more about ourselves," she closed her message. The Obamas may no longer be in the White House, but they are still spreading powerful messages and leaving their mark on the world.
