9 Nostalgic Sleepover Games You Loved That Your Kids Will Want to Play All Night Long

02/07/2018 - 09:50 PM

Sleepovers are a quintessential part of being a kid [1]. Even though you're under the watchful eye of the hosting parent or parents [2], the chance to bond with friends [3], stay up past your bedtime, and play silly games feels like the best night of freedom. If you have fond memories of your own slumber parties as a kid, we're wiling to bet you try to bend over backwards to make them magical for your own little ones [4]. Since wrangling half a dozen children and keeping them entertained is no small feat, be prepared with all the games you played and loved [5] when you were a child. These nine nostalgic sleepover activities will keep them happy and you reliving your past.

Telephone

Somehow, the simplest of phrases can get completely (and hilariously) transformed when you're forced to whisper. Sitting in a circle, children will take turns whispering the same silly phrase to the person next to them until it reaches the last person, who then says it out loud to see if it's still correct. But they'll probably get so jumbled that they'll erupt into laughter halfway through!

Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board

One child lies on the floor face up, while the others gather around and place two fingers under her while chanting, "light as a feather, stiff as a board." As they raise her up, it will appear as if the child is floating.

MASH

While your kid's MASH (which stands for Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House) game might not include Jonathan Taylor Thomas as a potential partner like yours did, kids will love figuring out how their future lives will turn out, thanks a to a little piece of paper. Floor Is Lava

While adults only see a couch and a coffee table, kids and their wild imaginations see the only way to protect themselves from a floor that has suddenly turned into lava. Bonus points if they manage to bounce from room to room.

Pillow Fight

The truth about pillow fights is that during a slumber party, they're likely to happen, whether you want them to or not. Lean into it, giving kids a designated time to duke it out with some extra fluffy pillows (and away from your home decor).

Truth or Dare

The best part about this game is it can be as silly or serious as kids want. Children take turns picking between having to tell a truth about themselves or having to do a dare. To lessen the chance of crazy questions or actions, take time beforehand with your kid and come up with some preselected cards.

Makeovers

Look, I'm not suggesting you let your little ones get in to your Fenty products, but makeovers can be fun. From mani-pedis to washable-marker makeovers, kids of all ages love experimenting with their look.

Twister and Other Classic Games

In addition to the human knot-maker called Twister, there are so many fun board games from your childhood that kids today will still love. It's time to bust out classics like Double Dare and Girl Talk [7].

Iron Chef

You can totally re-create Easy-Bake Ovens with a modern twist. After setting up an array of food, present to them one secret ingredient and task them with creating an amazing (or possibly terrible) dish.
