10 Perks of Sending Your Kids to a Private School

27/08/2018 - 08:30 PM

I was a teacher [1] for 10 years, and I have experience in both public and private schools. While I know there are definitely advantages to both, I've decided that for me and my family, private schools are where it's at. After teaching at a public school [2] for two years, I transitioned to a private one and stayed there until I decided to become a full-time mom [3]. And it was the best decision I ever made. At public schools, I dealt with over-the-top office politics and people doing anything to ensure the community would vote in favour of their budget every year. And while there are definitely some flaws to the private school system, I know that hefty tuition bill is worth every penny. Here's why.

You'll Feel Really Proud

Some parents want to shout from the rooftops when that acceptance letter comes in the mail. But even if bragging isn't your thing, there's nothing wrong with being really, really proud of your child for getting into a private school. Especially when their acceptance is a direct result of their hard work.

Smaller Classes

Many private schools have smaller-than-average class sizes, which allows teachers to provide more personalized instruction.

Fewer Politics

School board elections, budget woes, teacher's unions, and tenure aren't a part of the private school world. For teachers, that means fewer politics and more time to devote to what matters most: your children.

Fewer Tests

Oftentimes, private schools are not subject to federal mandates. That means they don't have to follow the Common Core curriculum or spend valuable classroom time preparing students for state-mandated exams.

More Play

As I research schools for my daughter, I'm finding that a number of the private schools place an emphasis on allowing children to learn through play. Less test prep and more play time? Sign us up!

Character Building

If you're considering private school, chances are you have a few Christian or Catholic schools on your list. Many of these schools offer classes on ethics and morality while emphasizing student character on a daily basis.

Diversity

Many private schools have international programs, which welcome students from all over the world. Depending on your school's program, you may even be able to host an international student in your home for the school year. What better way to introduce your children to another culture?

Extracurriculars

From an equestrian team to harp lessons, private schools can offer some unique extracurricular activities.

School Sports

Some private schools are known for their athletic departments. This makes them a hot spot for college scouts.

Uniforms

There's no more arguing in the mornings about what your child wants to wear to school. Uniforms make everyone's lives so much easier.
