Marie Kondo's Adorable Family Might Be the Only Thing More Perfect Than Her Folding
Since Netflix released Tidying Up With Marie Kondo, it seems that sparking joy is all anyone can talk about. But aren't you curious to learn more about the woman behind the insanely popular organising method? While Marie has been helping others tidy up for years, it should come as no surprise that her own house is immaculate — even with two toddlers! Her family of four includes her husband, Takumi Kawahara, who is the CEO of KonMari Media, and her 2- and 3-year-old daughters, Miko and Satsuki.
Marie and Takumi are both from Japan and continue to practice Japanese traditions even now that they've moved their family to California, where their company is headquartered. In addition to their working relationship, it seems they've perfected their roles at home, too. Marie shared on her blog that she and her husband "have established a rhythm" when it comes to household chores after using a spreadsheet system early in their marriage. These days they don't need a spreadsheet, but Marie handles cleaning and tidying (no surprise there!) and Takumi does the cooking, which he loves.
And now that they have children, the girls are their top priority. In fact, as the business continues to grow, Marie's main goal is "to work as efficiently as possible so [she] can spend more time with [her] children." Having children has also helped her think about her work from a different perspective: "After giving birth, I realised I'd been living my life thinking about what sparks joy for me. Now I'm thinking about what sparks joy for my child, for my family. Realising how happy I can be when I'm spending time with my family has been one of the wonderful surprises."
Marie told Time in 2017 that she loves to "sing children's songs" and "read out loud" to her daughters. And based on her Instagram snaps, she also enjoys spending time with them outdoors, going on lunch dates, and doing crafts together. But don't think Satsuki and Miko aren't in on the family business, too! They've been helping keep things tidy from a young age. Marie told The Wall Street Journal that "It's never too early to learn how to tidy up. You can let your children take on a challenge when they turn about 1 year old."
