10 Quick (but Seriously Fun) Family Getaways to Take This Fall

18/07/2018 - 08:26 PM

Fall family getaways [1] are the perfect excuse to take a break from the rush of back-to-school activities. It's also the perfect time to have a little fun before the stress of the holidays begin. While some destinations require long travel times [2] and extended periods away from work and school, these 10 spots can be done in a long weekend (if that!). And the best part? Since school will be back in session [3], you probably won't have to battle such huge crowds [4] as you would in the Summer. Keep reading for the best Fall travel spots to start planning your next adventure!

Disney

OK, hear me out. You may think this destination requires at least a week, but it really doesn't! Depending on where you live, Disney World or Disneyland can actually be pretty quick trips. The crowds are significantly smaller once school is back in session, and you can save money by sticking to just one park a day. If you let your kids choose their two to three must-dos, you can make this a fun and much less expensive weekend getaway.

Niagara Falls

If your family is equipped with passports, then we recommend seeing the falls from the Canadian side. The Fall colours are spectacular, and your children will likely be delighted by a ride on the iconic Maid of the Mist. Before you leave, take a drive to the picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake for some lunch, shopping, and, of course, wine for you.

The Poconos

The Pocono region in Pennsylvania is home to more than one indoor water park and resort. This quick getaway is sure to make your children forget all about the fact that Summer is over as they speed down some serious water slides or just float down a lazy river.

Outer Banks

Summer is peak season on North Carolina's Outer Banks [6], but Fall may actually be the best time to go. September and October are loaded with weekend events, many of which are music festivals. And since it's off-season, you'll have no trouble finding a reasonably priced rental property that's only steps away from the beach.

Sesame Place

This Sesame Street-themed amusement park has a variety of rides, shows, character meet-and-greets, and parades that will delight your little ones. Sesame Place draws large crowds in the Summer thanks to its water attractions, so Fall is the perfect time to go if crowds aren't your thing. We recommend its not-so-spooky Halloween [7] Event, where children can go trick-or-treating and take photos with their favourite characters (who will all be dressed in their Halloween best).

National Parks

The United States is home to a number of breathtaking national parks. If your family loves the great outdoors, a few days in one of the parks is the perfect Fall getaway. And don't worry about whether or not your kids will get bored — many parks offer a Junior Ranger Program to keep them engaged during their visit!

Amusement Park

If you have a family of thrill-seekers, then spend a day or two at a nearby amusement park. Many are open through the Fall and even host a few bone-chilling, Halloween-themed weeks that your little adrenaline junkies won't want to miss! If you live really close to one and still want to make it feel like a getaway, book a few nights at a nearby hotel.

Mystic, CT

Mystic has something for everyone. The aquarium will enthrall the animal-lovers in your family, while Mystic Seaport will delight the history buffs. After you're finished exploring the aquarium and maritime museum, head to one of the area's local orchards to pick your own apples.

San Francisco

You and your family will love exploring this Northern California city. The iconic Golden Gate Bridge is the perfect backdrop for some updated family photos, and your kids will love riding up and down the hilly streets in an old-fashioned cable car.

Pigeon Forge, TN

Just three-and-a-half hours from Nashville, Pigeon Forge is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. It's only minutes away from Gatlinburg, which is known as the gateway to the Smoky Mountains, so be prepared for some breathtaking views. And if you're looking for more than just sightseeing, Pigeon Forge is also home to the infamous Dollywood amusement park as well as a slew of other attractions, including the Titanic [8] Museum, Alcatraz East Crime Museum, and the Hollywood Wax Museum. Each museum building is a sight to behold, and you won't be disappointed!
