It's hard to imagine anyone, adults included [1], getting bored of Walt Disney World. Not only does it keep things like Mickey Mouse and Main Street classic after all these years, but it also constantly evolves to keep up with the imagination and magic happening in the world — a new Star Wars hotel set in space [2]? Yep. An insanely beautiful ride through Avatar's Pandora [3]? Obviously. While so many things immediately catch your eye while exploring the four parks and more than 25 resorts at WDW, there are also so many things you might be surprised to learn. Like, did you know you can take surf lessons? Or that there are secret menu items [4]? Whether it's your second or 17th time, read on to discover all the new ways you can enjoy your favourite parks.
Unique Tours
If you've seen all there is to see at Disney, try looking through a different lens on one of its special tours [5]. As of right now, you can go behind the scenes at the Magic Kingdom [6], explore the undiscovered future world we all know as Epcot [7], or see how Animal Kingdom's safari comes to life at night [8]. And for those looking for, ahem, the royal treatment, there are also VIP tour services [9], offering everything from door-to-park car service to expedited ride access.
Holiday Parties
Celebrating holidays at Disney is so much fun, as the parks really do come to life in a whole new way. Magic Kingdom [10] in particular offers two big celebrations — Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party [11] and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party [12] — both featuring special entertainment and effects (trick-or-treating for Halloween [13] and "snow" for Christmas, along with a themed parade and fireworks show). Since the parks close to those who don't have tickets during these events and there's so much going on for those who do, guests can also typically benefit from shorter or even no wait times for rides.
Special Events
In addition to the highly anticipated holiday parties, the Magic Kingdom is home to several RunDisney events [14] each year, including the Walt Disney World Marathon [15], the Disney Princess Half Marathon [16], and more. And even if you're not a big runner, check out Epcot's website for the latest info on the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival [17], the Flower & Garden Festival [18], and the Festival of the Arts [19].
Surprise Appearances and Shows
Another benefit of attending Disney's holiday and special event celebrations is access to additional, sometimes exclusive characters (during our last trip, Moana was only available during Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween [20] Party). You can also see if Disney staff will let you in on surprise appearances and character locations.
Exclusive Hotel Experiences
When it comes to Disney, the resorts can be attractions in and of themselves. Ask for night vision goggles at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge to see the animals roam the savanna after dark, roast marshmallows with Chip 'n' Dale [21] at The Campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort, or join the "rodeo" at Whispering Canyon Café at Disney's Wilderness Lodge [22] (we dare you to ask for ketchup while you're at it!). Several of the resorts (such as Disney's Polynesian Village Resort [23] and Disney's Contemporary Resort [24]) also offer unique character dining experiences that you can't get in the parks.
Horseback Riding
If you're not staying at (or visiting) The Campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort for the s'mores, at least stop in for the horseback riding [25], where those ages 9 and up can journey through the woodlands to see deer, armadillos, rabbits, ducks, and more. There are also pony, wagon, and carriage rides. You can also make a day of it by trying your hand at archery [26] and checking out the on-site petting zoo.
Secret Suites
Excursions aside, the most coveted room in all of Disney is still the Cinderella Castle Suite [27], complete with its own hot tub and a magic mirror that transforms into a TV. While you won't be able to buy your way in, as it's typically only made available via sweepstakes and other promotions, you can still usually see a light on way up in the castle as you're leaving the park at night.
Surf Lessons
Some may be surprised to learn that Disney is home to the world's largest wave pool (2.5 acres, to be exact). Take advantage of it with a private surf lesson at Typhoon Lagoon [28].
Hot Air Balloon Rides
It's a little-known fact that Disney Springs (home to over 100 shops, including the biggest character store in all of Disney [29]) houses the world's largest hand-painted helium balloon [30]. Hitch a ride to take in unparalleled views up to 10 miles away. Oh, and while you're there, you can also create a custom "Friendosaur" at the world's only Build-a-Dino Workshop [31], see a show, go bowling, or eat at one of Disney's special food trucks. [32]
Secret Menu Items
Last but certainly not least, embrace your inner foodie with one-of-a-kind Disney treats. Breakfast bread at 'Ohana, Dole Whip at Adventureland, Satu'li Sampler at Satu'li Canteen, and LeFou's Brew at Gaston's Tavern are just a few of my favorites. Certain items are always on the menu, but sometimes you have to ask!
