Hate Halloween? 10 Just-as-Fun Things to Do Instead of Trick-or-Treating

14/08/2018 - 09:35 PM

I can't pinpoint exactly when I started to dislike Halloween [1], but the older I've gotten, the more deeply I loathe the so-called holiday. Between macabre-themed parties [2], skimpy costumes, and strangers constantly knocking on my door, I'm pretty much over it. I did think that once I had children of my own, I'd start to appreciate it again — the way I did when I was young and trick-or-treating [3] in my mom's handmade costumes [4] — but instead, I find myself trying to convince my husband that our kids won't miss it (he strongly disagrees).

If you are like me and say "boohoo" to Halloween every year instead of just "boo," there's definitely no reason you and your family have to hide out in a dark house as hordes of children in search of processed sugar [5] invade your neighbourhood. You can still get out and have a lot of fun — it just won't revolve around death, monsters, or candy. Here are 10 things you can do instead of trick-or-treating this year to enjoy the day in your own way.

Have a Picnic

Head out to your favourite local park and enjoy the crisp Autumn air. Load up a picnic basket with some of your favourite pumpkin-flavoured snacks, and catch up with each other or some friends.

Travel

Planning a holiday? Consider flying on Halloween [7]. Some major airlines have been known to offer cheap flights on Oct. 31.

Head to the Movies

Pack up the family and head to the theatre. There's a good chance you'll have the place all (or mostly) to yourselves (just don't choose a scary movie).

Play With Pumpkins

Pumpkins can be a great Fall activity that aren't entirely tied to Halloween [8]. You can save this activity for prime trick-or-treating time so your kids will be occupied. Just cut off the tops, and let them dig in to make a mess. Afterward, help them carve or paint their pumpkins, then toast the seeds [9] for a healthy snack.

Make a Campfire

Take advantage of the cooler weather and cosy up by the fire. Your kids will love story time and toasting marshmallows in the backyard.

Go Bowling

Head over to your local bowling alley for a couple of games. It's perfect for a group, and there should be no shortage of lanes.

Go Out For Dinner

Head over to your favourite restaurant, or, if you want to add a little something extra to the night, let the kids choose where to go.

Have a Fall-Themed Scavenger Hunt

Head over to your local park, playground, or even your own backyard for a Fall-themed scavenger hunt. Your little ones will love exploring and finding all of the hidden treasures on their list.

Throw a Holiday Party

The day after Halloween [10] is Nov. 1, which is, in my book, the official start of the holiday season. Kick it off a few hours early by throwing a festive holiday party for just you and your kids or for all of your other Halloween-hating friends.

Take the Night Off

If Halloween [11] is a must for the rest of your family, then let them enjoy it. Take the night off. Park on the couch, wrap yourself up in your coziest blanket, grab a book, and enjoy a little peace and quiet. Just don't forget to leave the porch lights off.
