Amy Schumer made the switch to formula early on when it came to feeding her now 7-month-old son, Gene, and while this is a sensitive topic for some new mothers, the 38-year-old comedian doesn't feel guilty about her choice. In a recent interview with the Informed Pregnancy podcast [1], Amy opened up to prenatal chiropractor, childbirth educator, and labour doula Dr. Elliot Berlin about her decision to stop pumping [2].

"I had a lactation expert; Gene didn't latch, and I just didn't feel that push to make that happen," she explained. "I pumped for the first month or something, and then I was like, not for me, this is not for me, I didn't want to do it."

Amy began pumping less and eventually made the switch to formula full-time. Now, she wants other moms to know that they should do what's best for them. "I really encourage women — there's so much pressure to breastfeed, but really, it's all in your head," said Amy. "Some people absolutely love it, and I'm so happy for them, but it was bumming me out. Once it occurred to me that I could stop, I was like, 'I'm going stop.' You matter. It's going to better for your baby that you're OK."

While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that moms exclusively breastfeed their infants until at least 6 months old [3], there's something to be said for a mother's comfort and mental well-being, too.
