This month, Barbie is encourageing kids worldwide to reach for their Olympic-level dreams and look as stylish as an A-list celebrity at the same time. In celebration of Black History Month, Mattel has partnered with Queen and Slim stylist Shiona Turini to collaborate on a wardrobe photo project that promotes diversity and inclusion. The bold new collection is inspired by Shiona's own personal style, the work she has produced throughout her career, and the first-ever Black Barbie that launched in 1980. "Collaborating with @Barbiestyle is a childhood dream come true given I spent countless hours with my cousin playing with Barbies," Shiona said in a press release. "It was important for me to reflect on Barbie as an icon through the lens of Black culture during Black History Month." In an Instagram post, Shiona went on to say, "Thank you @barbiestyle for collaborating with me to create barbies with braids, finger waves and everything in between. Chicks by the layers, all different flavours. And even a curvy doll, in a crop top, with waist length twists. Baby Shiona is PROUD. Representation matters and I'm so grateful to be a part of this moment." In addition to the stylish new wardrobe, Barbie will be releasing five new Olympics-inspired dolls in celebration of the Summer 2020 Tokyo games. Each new doll comes ready to compete with its own Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 jackets and a mini gold medal to be earned after showcasing their athletic talents: skateboarding, rock climbing, surfing, karate, softball, and more.
