Whether your kid is going to Kindergarten in person, virtually, or is being homeschooled, reading with your newly minted elementary schooler is a great way to keep them engaged and learning [1] without them even fully realising. We've rounded up a bunch of books that either have to do with being in Kindergarten, highlight both educational and social-emotional skills and concepts they'll learn this school year, or are just fun reads for kids in the 4-6 age range.

AlphaOops!: The Day Z Went First

Filled with visually humourous details, Bob Kolar's colourful illustrations are the perfect foil for Alethea Kontis's snappy story about the comic confusion that comes when the letters of the alphabet, like a class of unruly children, step out of order and show that each one has a mind of its own."

Jabari Jumps

What It's About: "Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. He's finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, and he's a great jumper, so he's not scared at all. "Looks easy," says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encourageing father and a determined little boy you can't help but root for."

I Do Not Like Books Anymore!

What It's About: "Natalie and Alphonse REALLY like books. Picture books with Dad, scary stories with Mom, and especially stories they remember or make up themselves. So when it's time for Natalie to learn to read, she thinks it will be exciting -- she can have all the stories in the world now, and even read them to Alphonse. But when Natalie gets her first reading book, the letters look like squiggles and it isn't even a good story; it's just about a cat that can sit. 'I do not like books anymore!' Natalie declares. But she still wants to make up stories. With Alphonse's help, can she find a way to turn a love of telling stories into a love of reading stories? With her one-of-a-kind voice and wonderfully droll artwork, Daisy Hirst captures the familiar frustration of struggling to learn something new -- and the particular pride that comes when you finally succeed."

Do Not Lick This Book by Idan Ben-Barak [14] ($16)
