Busy Philipps recently shared that her 12-year-old child, Birdie, is gay. During the podcast Busy Philipps Is Trying Her Best, the actress talked about a family experience that prompted a public conversation about identity and pronouns.

In the episode with Caissie St. Onge and Shantira Jackson, Busy discussed Birdie's coming out at age 10 and her concerted effort as a parent to respect Birdie's pronouns (they/them) more fully. "I've been doing a bad job with the pronouns because Birdie said that they would like their pronouns to be they/them," Busy said. "I haven't been doing it because I have this public persona." She wanted these personal details to be shared in a way Birdie would be comfortable with.

Busy asked Birdie if it would be OK to talk about their identity on the podcast. "Bird was like, 'I don't give a f*ck,'" Busy recalled. "'You can talk about that I'm gay and out. You can talk about my pronouns. That would be cool and great.'"

As a mom, Busy admitted she makes mistakes navigating parenting but she's still "trying [her] best." Busy explained, "I want Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don't want to."
