Chrissy Teigen was as shocked as the rest of us [3] to learn that after years of trying to conceive and having two babies through IVF, she and John Legend had become pregnant with their third child [4] naturally. The pair chose to share their family's exciting news with the world through John's most recent music video for his song, "Wild," but the surprise announcement almost didn't happen.
John told People that the ultimate decision to share their baby news in this sweet way was made by Chrissy very last minute. "She was kind of hedging her bets, because we were early in our pregnancy. We hadn't taken all the tests to make sure everything is OK, and she said, 'Let's just shoot it.' And by the time the video would be edited, we could decide whether or not to use that scene," he said. "Then all the tests came back great and everything was healthy and good, so we knew it wouldn't be too early to tell people that we were pregnant by that point. So by the time the edit was done, we were comfortable saying to the world that we were pregnant [5]. But at the moment, it was more like, 'Let's shoot it, and if we're able to use it, we can. And if we can't, we can't.'"
John says that he and Chrissy, who is likely due in early 2021 [7], "didn't think we could have a baby the old-fashioned way." He added: "Other than the actual act of doing what one does to procreate, we weren't trying to have a baby at that time. We just were in quarantine and spending a lot more time together. And here we are."
In fact, John had previously poked a bit of fun at all of the couples he guessed would be part of a shelter-in-place baby boom. "I believed that there would be a quarantine baby boom, with all these couples spending more time together. And I would joke about it, but I figured it wouldn't happen to us because we've had fertility struggles. And now it happened to us, too."
